Just finished it. What a wonderful twist on an everyday occurance. How many of us have yelled at the dog for barking at "nothing." I'll never listen to her mad barking the same way again. Thanks for the nightmares :-) Can't wait to read the entire book. Everyone should read this short story and find out for themselves how well written it is and get the book to read more.

it does state that this is a short story, previewing a collection. However, in fact it just like the first chapter of a short story... it finishes just as the story starts, felt a bit cheated as would have got that as a sample from the book, instead I paid for it (ok, only 77p but still, some authors sell their whole books for that).

As a reader you start the book with the thoughts of the lab'dog Lucky, although this is a little disjointed as you switch between the dogs PoV and descriptive text; another irritation is the author keeps calling the dog an IT.

Was not impressed enough with the writing to carry on to the full collection.

The author had me at "tennis ball." I love dogs, and Warning Signs is delightfully and convincingly written from the point of view of a dog. The writing's filled with that sweetly different sensitivity to light and shade, to smell and nature, and to the permanence and unchanging comfort of home. But a thread of danger quickly wakens... something the dog can sense that the owner can't. The dog, with infinite patience, accepts the owner's rebukes and tries, still tries, so desperately tries to save... Ah, if only we listened better to our pets, to our better halves.

Beautifully channeling the thoughts of a dog, scarily creating the nightmare threat of "something" in the dark, and building tension through love and attention to detail, John Grover creates a truly scary and intriguing short story in Warning Signs, another short story and truly enjoyable snippet from his Creatures and Crypts collection.

Disclosure: I bought a free ecopy of this tale and thoroughly enjoyed it.

John Grover is a fiction author specializing in Horror, Fantasy and Sci-fi. He resides in Massachusetts and completed a creative writing course at Boston's Fisher College. He is a member of the New England Horror Writers.
