Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In her introduction, Cohen, an assistant professor of anthropology at Montclair State University in New Jersey, writes that the purpose of this volume is to present "divergent methodological approaches to the Irish linen industry." Chapters include a comparison of the Irish and Scottish linen industries in the 18th century; a history of the Irish linen boards; the politicization by Wolfe Tone's United Irishmen and the Order of Orange in the 1790s; and the various economic and political problems that plagued the industry both in Ireland and on the continent between the latter part of the 19th century and the beginning of WWI. Copiously footnoted and including tables, this highly academic work will appeal strictly to those with strong interest in the Irish linen industry.
