3.0 out of 5 stars Warprize
This started off with a bang and then fizzled out very fast. There was a good villain, wonderful secondary characters, a pretty interesting heroine and an almost too perfect hero. It just didn't work though. Was this a romance or a book about war? Really the battles took centre stage but I think the romance was supposed to be more prevalent. Here are just a few things...

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, May 31, 2005
Although this is a new author, she starts out with a bang. I loved it. Wonderful characters, great plot, vivid world, great romance, what more do you want.

Xylara is a Master Healer as well as the half-sister to the king of Xy. She has had to fight for the right to become a healer and prizes her ability more than her status as princess. When the Firelanders conquer their country and march on the capital she fights with her brother for the right to minister to the captured soldiers. He will not allow any healers to help them but he cannot stop her. She is stubborn and dedicated to her beliefs and people.

Kier is the Warlord of the Firelanders. When one of his generals is wounded and captured he enters the city to spy out the layout. While there he meets Lara who has protected the general by hiding his identity from her brother, She is buying herbs and ointments with her own money to treat the wounded. When she asks the tinker for Kavage, Kier notices because it is not a drink used by the Xyians. Kier is Warlord by right of challenge. He wishes to conquer and mix the two cultures.

As Lara tends to the prisoners she learns that the Warlord has arrived to give terms to her brother. Those terms include Lara. She does not know who the Warlord is only that by her submission can her people be saved. The enmity of her brother becomes clear as he rejoices to be rid of her.

Lara is the Warprize, unfortunately she has no idea what that is. She is told by her brother it is a slave for the Warlord. As she comes to know Kier and his people she learns to like and respect them. But someone is trying to kill her. Is it a Firelander or is it her own people? Her brother seems to be actively but slyly trying to undermine the peace she has purchased.

I loved this book. It could have gone so many ways that have already been explored, but it was totally fresh. I hated for it to end and I loved Kier, Lara, Simus, Jodan, Marcus and the rest. You will too. Don't miss this one. I look forward to her next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and touching story of honor, duty, courage and love, June 16, 2005
By
Julia (Walton, KY USA) - See all my reviews
I must admit that I was reluctant to read this book. I thought it sounded like another re-hash of the tired old theme: "honorable good girl sacrifices herself to the barbaric bad boy" and that made me want to yawn. Luckily, I needed to buy another book to get free shipping, so I took a chance. Now that I've finished my first read-through (yes, it merits multiple readings) I find it appropriate that I misunderstood the book in the beginning. After all, the book hinges on misunderstandings caused by vast cultural differences, a language barrier and deliberate deceit. In order for the characters to understand each other and their sociopolitical surroundings, they must shatter their assumptions; just like the story shattered mine. Yes, there's a "good girl" who makes a willing sacrifice, and even though that's been done to death; this story feels fresh and new. The characters are so vivid and alive that I half-expected them to step out of the book. The story is full of surprising details which make its world feel very real, and though the book's secrets won't stump any mystery fans, at least there are interesting twists. I'm very glad that this is a planned trilogy, as there's much more to explore and enjoy. I do have a nit-picky complaint about the editing. I was annoyed and distracted by some silly errors such as "this is better then that". If you're fastidious about your grammar, be forewarned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, June 7, 2005
By
This was really, really excellent, the book was amazing. This story takes place on a fantasy world, with medieval-type societies. Xylara, daughter of the former King of Xy, is courageous and kind and uses her skill with healing (the herbs/splint/knife type of healing) to help those in need. The current King of Xy is her stepbrother and he hates her deeply. The kingdom is at war with the Firelanders, and Xylara takes her healing oaths seriously, even healing Firelander prisoners.

Word of Xylara has reached the Warlord of the Firelanders, and when the Warlord defeats the Xyrian army, he demands their allegiance and Xylara as his Warprize. The King of Xy tells Xylara that she is to be the Warlord's slave. Xylara's love for her people sees her joining the enemy camp as the Warprize.

There's a culture clash, assasination plots, fighting, lots of new friends, and a strong love story. The secondary characters are funny and real, and the story is very heartwarming. Xylara is strong, gentle, and smart. The Warlord is strong, honourable and considerate (that is,when he's not beheading people who insult Xylara). As the weeks pass in the Firelander's military camp, Xylara overturns the Firelander's beliefs on healing and they come to love her. However, someone is trying to kill her and although she is treated well by the Warlord, she believes she has no status as her Warprize.

My favourite part was Xylara's revelation of what a Warprize really was. This is the first of a trilogy about Xylara and the Warlord. I have read every Tor paranormal romance, and this story beats the others hands down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could not put it down - and I'm NOT a romance reader!, June 1, 2005
So much more than a romance. The clean, well-told, not-overloaded-with-wacky-magic Fantasy, with the tasty and satisfying addition of a red-hot romance!

Me, I like to be drawn in to a romance. I love to fall in love, mind, body, and soul. No bodice-rippers for me.

I identified with Xylara at once as a woman of independence, intelligence, and integrity. Falling in love with the barbarian "brute" who basically kidnapped her from her ivor-tower existence of Healer was the last thing she had in mind... but as she fell for Kier, so did I.

I savored the developing heat and attraction, not-too-quickly slaked. The innocence unveiled. The true feeling of the hero for his "captive" bride, his eager-to-please puppyishness contrasted with his fiery temper and battle-rage. The pure physical high voltage.

Great story, GREAT foreshadowing, great world, great characters. Can't wait for book two.

Could not put it down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just a Romance, June 8, 2005
I was so enthralled by this book that I couldn't put it down. I finished it around 3:30AM. I was pulled into this book. The story and characters were so vivid that I would often find myself crying and laughing on the same page. The best part is that this is the first part of a trilogy. We will get to revisit with these characters again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended reading!, July 8, 2005
Xylara "Lara" is daughter of the late Warrior King Xyron. As such, Lara always knew her fate was a political alliance marriage. Still, Lara's interest has always been healing. Therefore, she grew up and became a Master Healer. Lara treats her people, as well as the prisoners of war. To a Healer, it did not matter if the patient is friend or foe, only that he needs wounds treated. Her half-brother, Xymund, sits on the throne and rules the Kingdom of Xy, but does not do a good job of it. The warring "Firelanders" would soon conquer Xy.

Lara was shunned when she first went to aid the enemy warriors in the prison section. But after much persistence and then proving her healing abilities, the wounded warriors accepted her and looked forward to her visits. It is Lara's fighting spirit, good heart, and healing talent that changes her fate.

When King Xymund and Warlord Keir meet to discuss "true peace", the Warlord demands Lara as "Warprize". Xymund swears fealty to Keir and Lara goes with Keir, not knowing what to expect. But the peace is threatened as assassination attempts are made on Lara. If the Warprize should did, the lands will run red with the blood of thousands.

***** Absolutely fantastic! I lost half a night of sleep because I could not stop reading this novel. Lara and Keir will have three books. But do not worry, this book does not end and leave you hanging. (I hate it when a book does that.) This tale blends what seems to be historical romance (horses, swords, etc) with fantasy. It is obviously not something that could have ever happened on Earth; however, the book never mentions what planet it is set on. If not for the fantasy elements, you could very well believe this was set back in the days of Vikings or knights. Highly recommended reading! *****

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of potential....., October 18, 2005

Salty Girl (Salt Lake City) - See all my reviews
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I agree with most of the positive comments about this book.... the author did a fabulous job of creating a rugged, intriguing world with a wonderfully sympathetic heroine. I am hooked and looking forward to the sequel.

My only complaints about the book are probably first-time author glitches that she may outgrow. For example.... the heroine's intelligence seems to vary from scene to scene. Near the beginning of the book she is crafty enough to suspect her brother would order the prisoners-of-war killed, but a few chapters later she is shocked, shocked! that he may have ordered the killing of innocent horses. Huh? Lara is also smart enough to become practically fluent in the Firelander's language after a few hours spent tending prisoners.... but then doesn't have the intelligence to notice that the "warprize" seems to be getting some mighty defferential treatment?

Hey.... these are just quibbles. So long as the reader is prepared to suspend their disbief and enjoy the ride, this is a fun, original book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantasy to savor, June 6, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Others have told you the story of Xylara, let me tell you of the imagery the author puts into her art. When reading this book, you will be transported to another time, another place. From the first sentence you will be right there with Lara, seeing, sensing, feeling everything she is experiencing. That's what I love about Elizabeth's work. Like the great masters of the art world, she is able to paint a canvas with words that enthrall you, and won't let you go until the end, then leaves you longing for more. She is definitely an author to keep an eye on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Fairy Tale Romance!, June 21, 2005
This novel is incredible. The heroine, Princess Xylara/Lara, is a healer in the tradition of royal and kind-hearted females. She is forced to deal with her inept half-brother who sits on the throne. Her people love her and they despise their king. Her brother Xymund is poorly battling the Firelanders. Meanwhile, Xylara is tending the wounded from her people and the prisoners of war. Somewhere in there, Xylara comes to the attention of the Warlord Kier and becomes the Warprize. Xymund is treacherous and tells his sister that she is to be the slave of the warlord. She is to be the Warlord's consort although she does not understand this until around two-thirds through the book. There is no mistaking who is good and who is bad in this book. It really reminds me of a mature version of a childhood fairy tale. I am anxiously awaiting the sequel, Warsworn.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Fantasy Novel, June 12, 2005
By
While marketed primarily as a Romance, Warprize is full-fledged fantasy novel which contains a love story. Elizabeth Vaughan has an amazing talent for world-building, creating not only the city-state of the protagonist, but the complex and very different world of the Firelanders who attack the city. The customs, perspectives, and characters of these two worlds are vividly shown with a creativity and charm that is truly impressive. The author interweaves characters, events, and storylines with an easy flow of narrative that is beyond the ability of many novelists and well beyond the ability of the typical first time novelist. Her challenging choice of maintaining Xylara's perspective throughout the book not only helps the reader identify with the character, it builds tension and provides an excellent mechanism for us to learn of the Firelander world as Xylara does. The apparent ease with which the author reveals her story within the confines of this difficult approach demonstrates that Vaughan is an accomplished writer and one to be watched. A delightful read. Highly recommended. Heyla! Thank you, daughter of Xy. Donald J. Bingle, Author of Forced Conversion. www.orphyte.com/donaldjbingle
