This review is from: Warren Wolf (Audio CD)
Warren WolfIf Warren Wolf's debut CD on Mack Avenue Records, entitled "Warren Wolf" is a sign of things to come, look out! From the incredibly muscular vibe riffs on the opening track, "427 Mass Ave" , to the tenderly light reverbs and airy melody of "Emily", new young gun vibraphonist Warren Wolf's versatility, musicality, and sheer talent leaves a deep and lasting impression, and a penetrating hunger for more. What's immediately apparent is that Warren Wolf's style of play is deeply rooted in the finest traditions of Bebop jazz; so much so that when closing my eyes and listening intently to this CD over and over again, I found myself picturing some of the great legends like Bobby Hutcherson, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy, standing and nodding in the background completely satisfied that their torch will be eternally burning bright in the very capable hands of Mr. Wolf. His effortless play and range are at times simply astounding. My most favorite among many favorite cuts on this CD include his virtuoso vibe solo in Senor Mouse, a real showcase for Wolf's impeccable timing and sensitivity, and "One for Lenny" that will simply leave you breathless in amazement at the sheer technical genius and skill level of this 31-year-old. Wolf's rendition of One for Lenny is like Bebop on steroids. His speed of play, clarity, and flawless transitions are nothing short of breath-taking. In a word, Warren Wolf's new CD is "Blazing". |
