Marines and those who are intrigued by Marines will be reading this. The book describes the Marines as the "brotherhood", to which I have nothing but agreement, yet although there are centuries of traditions (blood stripe from the battle that Marines lost 68+% of their men etc, ) the current day gunk that keeps Marines together is their ballsy "I'll do you...

My parents, friends and girlfriend could never understand my so called obsession with the Corps..from the stickers on my car, to my reading material and even my apparel. To truely understand a Marine, you must be one. This book, however, does a great job explaining to the non-initiated. The book can sometimes be repetative and the constant references to the "Diety" (cant you just say God?) can be annoying, but, overall this was a motivating and refreshing look at my beloved Corps. It breaks everything down from the history, customs and mentality of the Marines. For the person in your life that just does'nt get it, or for Motivating yourself, this is a darn good read.

Marion Sturky is currently the finest transscriber of observed
and experienced Marine Combat. You must start with Bonnie Sue
then read Warior Cutlure and finally Murphy's Laws of Combat to
fully arrpreciate the splended writing and experience of our
Corps. For Marines [Once, Always], Warrior Culture will say finally someone got it. Its so captivating you'll want to give
copies to men who will appreciate it and after reading will think, Why did it take so long to put something so simple so well.

Marines and those who are intrigued by Marines will be reading this. The book describes the Marines as the "brotherhood", to which I have nothing but agreement, yet although there are centuries of traditions (blood stripe from the battle that Marines lost 68+% of their men etc, ) the current day gunk that keeps Marines together is their ballsy "I'll do you one better" attitude and the way the peacetime sweating helps them prevent bleeding in war. I've mentioned it before, yet it must be mentioned here...the true look comes from one author...P.Chadz with his collection of "in your face memoirs" that show actually what the modern day Marines do on training and liberty to keep their tribe the finest brotherhood in all the services. Let these stories be a harboring area where your mind is allowed to go back to and understand that these ideas and principles probably got most young boys to enlist, yet the book from CHADZ is the stories that makes them become a brotherhood, and these types of stories keep repeating themselves, each day a new generation walks across the bases of Pendleton, Lejuene and beyound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marrying a Marine is being a Marine., January 4, 2003

Once a Marine Alway's a Marine. I saw that was evident on a 23 day WWll cruise we took in Oct. with Veterans'of the war as we passed every Island in the Pacific and had a memorial service for All who died during that time. It was emotional for everyone every serviceman and vet. We took the trip in honor of my father in law who was wounded in WWll and has since passed. But the honor of a silent husband who stands proud for what he has always believed in didn't have to even wear his hat or t-shirt with an emblem on it. Everyone knew he was a Marine. Now we have a grandson who is gung ho to be a marine and we would be very proud if he follows his dream and becomes a man of strength in his convictions, faithful forever to his country and mankind and lives a clean, well disciplined good life in the Corp. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Brotherhood, January 30, 2005
By
LDSMARINE (Los Angeles California) - See all my reviews
The Marines are a brotherhood, or so i am told. I believe they are the best men on earth, joined together to defend our country and faced with tasks that no one else would do. After reading this book, i know that the marines are more than just soldiers, that they are loyal, intelligent, hardworking, humble, powereful people that have chosen a life many dream or or see in the movies, but never experience. This is why marines are better than normal people, and why some people dont like marines. They know that marines are better people, since they make sacrifices most never even think of. This is why i am going to join the marines, so i may one day be part of the glorious brotherhood that is the United States Marine Corps!

Enjoy dipping into it. Was a SSgt for 5 years & 17 yrs as an officer. It accurately reflects what I experienced from 1946 until 1968.

The only, new to me, account was the Air America bit. Had flown Air America in VN, but was not aware of all that it accomplished around the world.

Bottom line for me was the emphasis on train, train, & then train some more if you want to keep your troops & yourself alive in combat.

My High School son has his heart set on becoming an Officer of Marines, so I ordered this book to help answer some of our questions. (i.e. Why is there a red stripe on their blue pants?. Where did Jarhead, Leatherneck, etc. come from?)It is an excellent book for that purpose. A real Marine would probably already know most of the information, but it is an good reference, easy to use and has a good deal of humor mixed in with the facts. Combined with Amazons great service, we are very pleased with our purchase.

I didn't really like this book. When I read it, I thought of it as a quote book. I mean, it has great quotes from Marines, but I don't really want to read a book on clips of quotes.
