More About the Author

The Army took David Drake from Duke Law School and sent him on a motorized tour of Viet Nam and Cambodia with the 11th Cav, the Blackhorse. He learned new skills, saw interesting sights, and met exotic people who hadn't run fast enough to get away.

Dave returned to become Chapel Hill's Assistant Town Attorney and to try to put his life back together through fiction making sense of his Army experiences.

Dave describes war from where he saw it: the loader's hatch of a tank in Cambodia. His military experience, combined with his formal education in history and Latin, has made him one of the foremost writers of realistic action SF and fantasy. His bestselling Hammer's Slammers series is credited with creating the genre of modern Military SF. He often wishes he had a less interesting background.

Dave lives with his family in rural North Carolina.

4.0 out of 5 stars Commanders' Nightmare, May 4, 2000
By
This review is from: The Warrior (Hammer's Slammers, No 5) (Paperback)
What do you do with a man who's too good a fighter? How do you lead a troopie who's so good at killing, he can't follow orders? And what happens when the man who follows orders is almost as good, gets all the promotions and is the killer's prime rival? A fascinating look at a soldier that's so good at killing, he's too dangerous for Hammer and Stuben to have in the Slammers. One of Drake's most detailed character studies of the ones you pray the other side doesn't have.

The Warrior

All about a trooper who is the best in his field at killing, but he has one small flaw, he can't follow orders. If you like Drake you can find this novel in an omnibus edition called Caught In The Crossfire. You , also, get a couple of short stories.
Highly recommended for fans of Hammer's Slammers, David Drake, and realistic combat. You can almost smell the burning flesh.

Gunner May, 2008
