Warrior of the Highlands by Veronica Wolff
Historical Romance January 6, 2009 4 Stars Warrior of the Highlands by Veronica Wolff is the third in her Highland series. This is a story of a love that transcends time and so much more. Haley Fitzpatrick is a student fascinated with weapons. When she comes across a gun that could possibly offer the opportunity to correct a historical inaccuracy, and become subject for her thesis, she is instantly obsessed. The obsession with the weapon results in being transported to 17th-century Scotland and coming face-to-face with Alasdair MacColla. Despite their mutual distrust for each other, they slowly develop a bond that grows into love. Unfortunately, Haley's awareness of history and what happens to Alasdair, forces her to make a decision: intercept to change history or allow it to go the course already knowing what the outcome will be? Haley's character is well rounded and quite interesting. Incorporated into the story is her suffering a traumatic experienced that could have left her defeated. Instead, she overcomes the trauma and develops into a strong woman, both physically and mentally. Ultimately, it is her strength that carries the book and the outcome. It also makes for some tense, nail biting moments! I really liked Haley and found her journey exciting. Veronica Wolff managed to balance her combined abilities without making her too good to be true. This love story is sweet and full of passion as well. The story did started a bit slow, but after the initial interaction between Haley and Alasdair, it took off! The storyline took some unexpected twists and turns that surprised me. Ms. Wolff has once again written a solid book with good character and a good story to match. Fans of her previous books will not be disappointed. I certainly wasn't and recommend it to anyone looking for a good story with memorable characters. Reviewed by Cez from Bookaholics Romance Book Club

an engaging time travel romance,
This review is from: Warrior of the Highlands (Berkley Sensation) (Mass Market Paperback)
Harvard University graduate student Haley Fitzpatrick is doing her dissertation on early modern historical weapons although her faculty advisor loathes her topic as being insignificant in the modern world. When she comes across an odd sword circa 1675 and a painting of her with the long dead Highland brutal warrior Alasdair "MacColla" McDonald, she is shocked. She is unaware that a seventeenth century witch Finona doing the bidding of the Campbells has placed a curse on the sword to insure MacColla's bride comes to distract his mind from war.
Back in modern day Boston when she touches the weapon, Haley is propelled back in time to 1675. As MacColla rescues his sister from his enemy the Campbell clan, he captures a stunned Haley near their encampment. He assumes she is a spy while she knows he is a vicious cold killer. However, as they fall in love, he realizes she is no Campbell agent and she concludes he loathes having to shed one drop of blood even that of his foes. She also sadly knows he will soon die in battle. WARRIORS OF THE HIGHLANDS is an engaging time travel romance starring a strong pairing as Haley learns first hand that to the victors goes the history books as her beloved is nothing liked the modern day depiction of him. Although she adapts too easily to being sent back over three centuries ago, fans will enjoy Veronica Wolff's fine tale as the author blends in real persona to anchor the time and place. Readers will enjoy the saga of twenty-first century Harvard meets seventeenth century Highlander. Harriet Klausner

Again, a light enjoyable read. The time-travel thing is a little hinky for me, but once you get past that, it's enjoyable. You get to know the characters that will be in the NEXT book, and want to keep reading...another one coming in November.
