About the Author
Dr. J.L. Aiello (10th Dan) Isshin Ryu has been training in the Martial Arts and Karate for over 33 years. He is a Doctor of Chiropractic and has created a unique practice which combines the rehabilitative and rejuvenating aspects of Martial Arts training and Chiropractic care. He has a Ph.D. in health science and is a Diplomat in preventive medicine. He began training in Tang Soo Do in 1967 and trained in Koei Kan, Isshin Ryu and AOkinawanmerican Karate, achieving rank in these styles. In 1974 Dr. Aiello developed the system of Shito Kan Karate Do and five Kata or forms. In March of 1997, he received the first Hanshi, Master level certification given in Isshin Ryu through Master Harold Long, 10th Dan Isshin Ryu. On September 21st of 1997, Master Harold Long presented Dr. Aiello with the high honor of Menkyo Kaiden in the Shimabuku-Long Lineage of Isshin Ryu, and his personal red Obi (belt). The Menkyo Kaiden translates to "all passed down" and represents Shihanthe transmission or passing on of the personal lineage. In this case, Master Long has given his heritage of Isshin Ryu from Grandmaster Tatsuo Shimabuku to Dr. Aiello with the expectation of its continued vitality. Dr Aiello has been Master Long's only private student for the last 5 years of his life, preparing him for the exclusive Menkyo Kaiden promotion. Public notation was given in newsletters, radio shows, and public appearances, also culminating in the ShitoKan IsshinRyu textbook; Heiho; Martial Arts Concepts and Strategy, authorized by Master Long. In addition to promoting Dr. Aiello, Master Long also promoted six additional Hanshi certifications and awarded three additional tenth Dans.
Dr. Aiello is recognized by the World Head of Family Sokeship Council and the World Kobudo Federation as founder of the ShitoKan IsshinRyu Karate System and holds the title of Hanshi and rank of 10th degree black belt. He was inducted into the Sokeship Counsel on the recommendation of Master Harold Long, 10th Dan Isshin Ryu Karate and Dr. Peter Urban, 10th Dan in U.S. Goju Ryu. Dr. Aiello was inducted into the World Kobudo Federation by Kyoshi John Therein, 8th Dan Jujutsu and Shihan Kevin Blok, 7th Dan in Aikido. He is certified by Saikoh Shihan Mikio Nishiuchi of the International Okinawan Kobudo Renmei as a Shidoin instructor, in Kobudo, ancient weapons. Dr Aiello serves as the Midwest Director of the International Okinawan Kobudo Association. Among his other teaching certifications he includes Shidoin, personally given by Eizo Onishi, founder of Japanese Koei Kan Karate with the recomendation of Brian Frost. Zensho
Dr. Aiello has written 8 books about Karate and Martial Arts philosophy and is also Producer and Director of the Warrior Adventure Series, nine instructional video tapes done in partnership with Paramount/Fox Inc. He has owned and operated eight Dojo in the past and has taught more than 25,000 students in the arts of Karate and Kobudo throughout the United States. He has taught and travelled the world to expand his wisdom about the Martial Arts, including South America, Greece, Italy, the Bahamas, Canada, Japan and China.
The International ShitoKan IsshinRyu Karate Association, which he founded and heads, has Dojo in the Midwest.
