A must read for all Latinos,

I LOVE THIS BOOK! I rarely read poetry, but this book speaks to me and makes me proud to not only be a Latina, but to be proud of being human. Every Latino adult and teenager should read this book. It provides us with hope and understading in a world where this is sorely lacking. Kudos to Sr. Lopez for such a wonderful book.

I am astounded by ProfessorLatino's review of Lopez' book. Propaganda? Lopez needs no stinking propaganda to get his poetic voice across. MTV? Sure. I put Lopez' poetic voice up there alongside the other great poetic-prophetic voices of the "MTV Generation" including Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur. Boston loves "Warrior-Poet!" What's not to love? Is Mr. ProfessorLatino playa' hatin'? For God's Sakes, What ever happened to backing up your own, Mr. ProfessorLatino? ... if you are Latino. Didn't anybody ever teach you in your Chicano Studies coursework that we should only criticize our own behind close doors? We get enough criticism from the mainstream, we don't need our "own" trying to bring down one of our stars, especially one of our poetic stars. Mr. ProfessorLatino? How 'bout Mr. Uncle Tom Latino. Sounds more fitting.

A true GEM!,

If you're looking for a classically structured sonnet or a 5 anipestic-lined limerick; a 6-line ballad stanza or a 5-7-5 Haiku; or the unrhymed counterpart of many types of poems written in tetrameter, pentameter, hexameter, or whatever number of regular feet to the line, then don't buy this book. HOWEVER, if you're looking for an innovative, intelligent, creative work of freeform poetry then read on.
It's a shame to see such a poor review (below) for such a shining example of talent. The following line from that review particularly bothered me: "As a professor of poetry, I would not recommend this book for those trying to teach others the basic concepts of poetry." professorlatino Not too sharp. I'm disappointed that one such as this is teaching in our educational system. This is not a textbook on classic poetry "professor". Nor is it basic. It's not trying to teach the basic concepts of poetry. Quite the contrary, Warrior Poet of the Fifth Sun at times hints at different poetic styles or combinations thereof, but ultimately stays clear of the labels of structured poetry with a freeform that speaks to the heart, mind and soul of any true thinker. Lopez seemingly effortlessly ties together words and thoughts like a craftsman, as he takes us through experiences and emotions that convey not only the Mexican-American experience, but also touches on hip-hop culture, technology and so much more. In professorlatino lies clearly an example of one who can absolutely not think outside of the box. All forms of poetry exist because someone at some point in time shook the status quo with their creative expression. It is unfortunate that professorlatino has to be spoon fed, hence regurgitate ideas; a bulimic bard. It's also unfortunate that this failed bard be turned lose in our schools to educate and further suppress the growth of the beautiful minds of sons and daughters. Uh...professorlatino, shame on you...don't be ashamed of who you are! I urge anyone thinking on buying this book to take with a grain of salt the "wisdom" of the "professor". :) "It is not enough to have a good mind; the main thing is to use it well." Rene Descartes

Horrible!,
This review is from: Warrior-Poet of the Fifth Sun (Paperback)
I bought this book based on the reviews on Amazon and was outraged! This book was clearly written by someone who lacks poetic capabilities and is shamefully using the Latin craz as a pathetic attempt to sell books. As a professor of poetry, I would not recommend this book for those trying to teach others the basic concepts of poetry. One of the reviews stated this is the next voice of the MTV generation and that was the only accuracy; this belongs on MTV along with all the other meaningless propaganda.
