5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Finest, March 11, 2000
This review is from: Warrior Scarlet (Paperback)
I first read Warrior Scarlet as a youngish teenager, knowing absolutely nothing about it, and was immediately captivated by it. It rates as one of the finest novels I have ever read, as a child or an adult. The writing is beautiful, poetic, and ultimately very moving. The novel gives a very clear picture of life in the Bronze Age, and is very visual in its language, and the Charles Keeping illustrations complement ithe text perfectly. I recommend this book to anyone who likes early historical fiction, whatever age they are - this book has stayed in my memory for many years, and is regularly re-read. Give it to an imaginative child, they won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hop aboard this time machine!, November 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Warrior Scarlet (Paperback)
I thought this book was a wonderful trip back into the beginning of the Iron Age. Anyone interested in the ancient Celts or in prehistoric Britain should not miss this book. The story is easy-to-read, yet moving, and has a wonderful message about overcoming handicaps and the power and beauty of friendship, determination, and inner courage. It's a great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book, September 25, 2004
This review is from: Warrior Scarlet (Hardcover)
If you are looking for a book which brings you back to a time when all was peaceful, when the ties of brotherhood were strong, when friends were made easily, and the world was not so complicated, this is the book. Drem, the young hero, has to undertake a journey to overcome his handicap to prove himself to his tribe. Throughout his journey, he has met three soulmates, one a hound, another a blood brother and the last, a loved girl.
A story about perserverance and ever-lasting friendship, this book has etched itself into my mind. But if you are one who does not enjoy books with predictable story lines and lovingly detailed descriptions, then this is not the book for you.

First Sentence:
THE old shepherd sitting with his face turned seaward and his broad-bladed spear across his knees, seemed as much a part of the downs as did the wind-stunted whitethorn trees along the bank behind him : a little man, dark and knotted and tough as a furze root, with fine wrinkles round his eyes, under their jut of badger-grey brows, that told of a life-time of looking into the distance in sun and wind and rain. Read the first page
