5.0 out of 5 stars A must-buy for people interested in this particular subject, August 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Warrior Tradition: Shogun - Supreme [VHS] (VHS Tape)
After watching Akira Kurosawa's "Ran," I became very interseted in Shoguns and 16th century Japanese warfare. A month after my second viewing of "Ran," I heard there was going to be a TV show about Shoguns on A&E, so I watched it.

It was great. It provided lots of history and information as well as vital backrounds of some of Japan's greatest Shoguns. It also gave me information on some of Japan's Medievil history, and some insights on Japanese 16th century warfare.

But there is a downside. It ended a little abruptly and it didn't have as much information as I'd hoped. What happened to information on battle tactics and common strategies? What happened to the turmoil after one of Japan's greatest Shoguns died leading to a 100-year civil war? What I'd hoped for was a long, intersting video with LOTS of information and history. (Maybe I expect a lttle too much these days.)

About three months later, I got assigned a report for my 11th grade history class. My teacher let us choose the subject. Guess what I choosed...Shoguns! I went to a video store and purchased this video. It helped me A LOT!!! My final grade ended up being an A. Hooray! Even though I was hoping for an A+, I knew that an A was practically just as good.

All in all...

PROS: Intersting historical insights on 16th century Japan; Vital backround information on some of Japan's greatest Shoguns; Great historical information of some of Japan's greatest battles.

CONS: A bit too short; It didn't provide as much infromation as I'd hoped.

BOTTOM LINE: Don't get me wrong - the pros definetly outweigh the cons. Overall, a wonderful refrence to Japan's Shoguns, medievil history, and battles. If you need information on Shoguns for a report, buy this. If you don't have a report and are just interested in Shoguns, (Like I was) buy this. Guranteed to please anybody intersted in this particular subject.
