This is a well detailed book with great action scenes. Bloodsong, our heroine, is immediately sympathetic. Caught between the Death Goddess, Hel, and the sorcerer king Nidhogg, she battles to save her daughter. The creatures, all from Norse mythology, are vividly presented. Things are a bit rushed, almost compressed, a fault taken care of in the next two books of the series. Bloodsong, though powerful, still has to struggle against overwhelming odds. The grimness of Norse Mythology comes thru very well, along with enough hope to carry the reader to the end.
