The last two books in this series have made me wonder if Johnstone is actually still writing them. The book is full of inconsistencies, character personalities have changed, key characters have disappeared, and the settings are inconsistent. Not very long ago in this series the population was decimated, the large cities destroyed, and people were struggling for suvival outside the SUSA. In this book world seems to be very near what it was before the great war that started the series. The only sections that are original, in my opinion, are the parts heavily copied from previous books for filler. You can still detect Johnstone's trademark style in his other (non-Ashes) books, but this once great series needs rapid repair or a quick end.

I could write these books to iif all I had to do was take hundreds of pages out of previous books and then write a hundred or so original pages to fill in.. As if using pieces from other books wasn't bad enough there were quite a few errors in how the previous books were used.

After reading almost the entire series I think I will stop here.

My husband is a big fan of Mr. Johnstone & I've read most of his books when I run out of my own. *G* Normally, I find them an engrossing read, kinda like eye candy. This book, though, I found a huge "error." On page 248 the scene that follows where they're trying to assinate Ben Raines is the SAME SCENE (except for some name changes) as on page 105 in Crisis in the Ashes. What happened here, Mr. Johnstone???? It's still an fun read & I would recommend it. While it can be a "stand alone" it's much more fun to start off w/the entire series.

After the last few books in this series I thought that Mr. Johnstone was getting tired of this series, the stories were draging on and on. But after this book I think that he has gotten his second wind for this series. this book has a lot of the old style of writing I enjoyed in the series when I started reading it years ago, lots of action and suspense. The book is the next one in the story of Osterman and her plans to get rid of Ben Raines and the S.U.S.A. and the lengths she will go to to get her way. the fighting is in the style of books in the series like Valor in the Ashes and others of that time.

lord i really like the ashes series
i see so many of the general,s statements
"from cradle to grave"
and many others,
too much of a load on the working people who are footing the bill for those who wont work but want to be housed, fed, and want free health care.
GET OUT AND GET A JOB.
if someone needs help because they are unable to work for medical reasons or some other legitamate reason, i have no problem with problems with this.
enough is enough!!!

I have read many of the books in this series, however, I never know if this is a new release or a re-release. I have purchased books that I had read several years ago thinking it was a new release. It would be great if Amason would let us know when a book is new or a re-release.

I like Mr Johnstone's books about the ashes series but in this one I found two areas he should of refered to his earlier books. One was when Dr. Buck took over for Dr. Chase , in refering to Dr. Chase's age as in the 60's and also he referes to the Gulf War. THis took place in the early 90's when the USA was suposed to be down and out and the SUSA had not started. Whose army fought this war ?

For those not aware, William Johnstone actually died a while back (2004). The stories are now being written by others, based on plans and concepts he set up before he died. I believe, though I may be wrong, his daughter, Jo, now has overall control of the stories and the way they're written. His family is doing the best they can to maintain the standard and principles he established.
If the stories don't quite mesh with the style you're used to, be flexible. The concepts are the same, just the writers are different.
