Recently single, Katarina Herelius came to the Cardinal Ranch Powwow to revel in a life that was finally her own. Going back to school to finish her nursing degree, Rini wasn't interested in looking for a man. But he found her despite her plans...
Colton Lonetree, who hails from the Luiseno Indian nation, was attending the powwow to dance the rigorous hoop dance, not expecting to find a woman. But fate conspired against both as they were drawn together for one night of wild and wonderful passion. Rini fled the next morning, after jumping to conclusions and believing that Cole was capable of cheating on her.
All this in the first two chapters, and our heroine and hero don't even know the other's name? Goodness, are you in for an intense ride with this story!
Chapter three continues our story six months later, with Rini pregnant and on her way to the adoption lawyer's office. Still uncertain as to her course of action, she is seeking more information. Little does she know that her passionate warrior is a lawyer, visiting the office, and happens to catch a glimpse of his "Fire Eyes" woman. Returning to the office, Rini is astonished to learn that her lover in a loincloth is a lawyer, and intent on being a full-time father to his child.
To Cole, this means marriage with a pre-nuptial agreement. In Rini's eyes, a marriage-in-name-only is the way to go. Misconceptions continue, as Rini believes Cole is only after her baby, and Cole's past comes back to haunt him. His first wife left him and his mother gave him up for adoption to a white couple, leading Cole to make the remark that "women always leave me" and not allowing him to be open to the possibility that Rini could be different.

I have not read Nina Bruhns before, but had heard good things about her writing. So I picked this up and learned that this book had previously won a Golden Heart Award. I felt it would be a good read, and I was not disappointed.
It is about a woman recovering from a bad relationship who meets a man in full dress as a warrior at a Powwow. They have a one night stand, and a baby is concieved. He does not learn about the baby until several months later. He is afraid she will give the baby up for adoption, despite her assurances that she will not. He asks her to marry him, for the sake of the child and she reluctantly agrees. Some of the scenes between them are hot, so if you like your romance with a little spice, you will like this.
The story was emotional, but not a tear jerker. The hero and heroine had to deal with their past before they could go on with the future. It was told over several months, allowing each character to grow gradually, not suddenly. It was a enjoyable story and I recommend it. I am now in search of Ms. Bruhns' previous book, Catch Me If You Can.

This is an unusual and poignant love-story of two people who fall in love at first sight, are forced apart, then meet again and begin the tortuous path back to love.
On first reading, one finds the story so well-written that one quickly begins to feel surprisingly deeply involved. More careful reading, however, reveals the depth of Ms Bruhns's writing: The hero, Cole, is a Native American, adopted as a baby by a white couple. In spite of the love shown him by his adoptive parents, he has never quite got over feeling rejected by his birth-mother. Ms. Bruhns describes so well - and makes us feel for Cole - how his early sense of rejection colours all his present-day life.
At a pow-wow, Cole meets Rini, recovering from an affair with a despicable womanizer; there is an instant attraction between the two.
After Rini watches Cole do his hoop-dance in Native regalia, they meet outside his lodge, and thus begins their night of love, described most sensitively and lyrically. Trust me, you will fall in love with Cole!
The next morning, when Cole leaves for the dance-circle, Rini promises to meet him there. When she sees him surrounded by charming young Native women, her lack of self-esteem makes her flee, instead of waiting for Cole to notice her and come to her.
Later, we find Rini, 6 months pregnant, at the office of an adoption attorney. Cole, a lawyer, sees her there and, realizing she is pregnant with HIS child, reacts furiously, demanding his child, as he does not want it to suffer, as he did, from being adopted. Rini, unfairly judging Cole by her despicable ex-boy-friend's standards, is equally furious with him, still believing he flirted with the young women.

This is my first review I have ever written. I felt compelled to write this only because I read this book in one day...yes one day! I let my son play the Wii the entire time, so I could, haha. This book got under my skin!!!! It drove me crazy!! I fell in love with Colton, no matter how stubborn he was and the fact I wanted to smack him upside the head so many times I couldn't stand it! I just wanted to hold him and tell him everything was as it should be and and to pull his head out of his butt! My heart broke so many times...near tears for them both! Rini...what can I say...I imagined a beautiful woman, not knowing her truth worth, but also envied her for her dreams and desires that she wouldn't let die. A truly wonderful woman. This is a fantastic read! I would read it again, which I think says a lot for a book! I have to admit also...I read this book over a week ago and just now was brave enough to write this review...I am still running this entire story through my head!
