Who would have thought that space travel, anthropology and Indians (I'm part Cherokee and I don't do Politcal Correctness -- so Sioux me) would make for a viable mix in a novel!!?? I originally came across Michael and Kathleen Gear on an Author's cruise in 2004. After meeting such a delightful couple I had to start reading their "People of the ..." books and have enjoyed the ten or so that I've read so far very much. Only recently did I discover that Michael had also done some sci-fi a couple of decades ago, so I thought I'd check them out. I anticipated good writing, of course, but Warriors of Spider turned out to be so much more than I expected -- I absolutely love it! The characterizations in the novel are excellently done and utterly believable as real people, each with his or her unique collection of both halos and warts. The parallels that the author draws between the sterile, Directorate-controlled society and our own were apt twenty years ago, but are almost chilling in their accuracy today. And as with the "People of the ..." books, the reader finds himself not only enjoying a well told story, but learning a considerable amount about human nature as well. For some excellent sci-fi entertainment, check this one out!
