Book Description

September 1992
As warfare has brought forth outstanding deeds and diverse dreams, it has also conspired to create in the mouths of those involved in combat some of the most poignant and perceptive words ever spoken. Apart from the insight into, and record of, despair and determination, this book surveys a multitude of emotions which are part of life in peace as well as in war. The book excludes civilian comment to focus exclusively on the words of soldiers and military men. Over 100 people are quoted and the book contains 11,000 quotes covering 350 subjects, 4000 years of history and 400,000 words.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This anthology draws its material from 4000 years of reflection on war. The authors range from Clausewitz and Napoleon to otherwise obscure junior officers. Most of them are soldiers, and most are part of the Western military heritage. The quotations are well chosen overall, but the work's primary value lies in its structure. The entries are grouped under almost 350 separate subject headings: concepts and topics such as Danger, Imagination, and Will. This detailed organization is a welcome contrast to Justin Wintle's Dictionary of War Quotations ( LJ 3/1/90), facilitating access to the aphorisms for specialists and nonspecialists alike. A biographical index of contributors enhances the user-friendliness of a volume that belongs in most public and private collections on military history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful Quotations Pertinent To Life, June 23, 2001
By A Customer
As a former US Marine, and current minister of the gospel, I have found this book to have pertinent and useful quotes - not just for military men and women. Topics such as initiative, leadership, success, planning / preparation, discipline, etc. are not just important on the battlefield, but for life in general. I have been able to successfully utilize some of these quotes in teachings and counseling sessions that I have done. For example, concerning those of us whose job it is to raise up future leaders, General Bruce C Clarke said "You must be able to underwrite the honest mistakes of your subordinates if you wish to develop their initiative and experience." Also, General Moshe Dayan said "It is better to struggle with a stallion when the problem is how to hold it back, than to urge on a bull that refuses to budge." Overall, I believe it is a great and very interesting book - for those in or out of the military.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warrior's Words, April 10, 2000
By A Customer
Warrior's Words is a necessity to those who work in the military. There were several tid bits of information and reminders of our noble profession of arms. Even those words from old soldiers of the past still hold knowledge that is usable today. Mr. Tsouras brought together a great blend of generals and time periods. I would recommend this book to anyone looking at the military as a career....

5.0 out of 5 stars Warrior's Words has many uses, April 12, 2011

John E. Nevola "Author" (Mount Olive, New Jersey) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Peter G. Touras has done a masterful job of collecting, collating and organizing quotes from some of the most famous and successful military leaders who ever lived.

This collection of wisdom is not only for the military-minded but also for those who desire to understand the principles of leadership, loyalty, honor, sacrifice, teamwork and fate. The quotes span the timeframe from well before Christ to modern times and touch every geographical point on the planet.

The quotes are organized into general categories such as Decisions, Moral Courage, Lessons Learned, Tenacity, Surprise, Objectives, etc. One has only to find the category of interest in the alphabetical Table of Contents to see all the famous quotes in that section. In addition, the 48 page bibliography describes the lives and accomplishments of every person attributed to a quote.

Warrior's Words contains thousands of quotes, which provide insight, inspiration and motivation from world-famous leaders. It was indispensable to me. I utilized this reference work extensively in finding chapter quotes for my own historical novel.
