Book Description

April 30, 2007
Warships and Warship Modelling offers an overview of the design, development and classification of modern warship types. In the first section it analyzes the constructors original models, explaining why and how they were made. The reader is shown how to research and select information on specific ships and how to find and understand plans.

The book then turns to scale modeling with detailed chapters on choosing a subject, a scale, methods of construction, materials and techniques, and the details of fittings and painting. Together, the two sections give the model builder a deeper insight into the logic of the full-sized vessel, and the relationship between that vessel and the realistic scale model or working model.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Warship Modeling, January 20, 2009

This review is from: Warships and Warship Modelling (Hardcover)
Warships and Warship Modelling is not only a great introduction to the hobby of building radio control model warships of the modern era, but has value for all interested in the subject, regardless of experience.

Starting with brief overviews of warships and their construction, and lavishly illustrated, the authors have created a modern version in the tradition of "Building Warship Models", by PC Coker. For over 30 years that volume has been sought by avid modelers for not only the information, but also the inspiration provided by quality photography of the ship modeler's art. In this book, we have a modern version of that work, with the added value of useful reference shots illustrating real warships.

The subject of the book is the engine-powered surface warship, so fans of the great sailing ships may want to consider other alternatives, as will submarine aficionados. Those interested in the Steel Era are very well served though, as the book covers from the late 1800's to today's most modern warships. In the pages are many great examples in both scale and prototype of not only the most famous warships, but also quirky experiments such as the Russian circular warships.

Although real warships are discussed, the majority of the book is spent showing how models are created. Initial research, outfitting a workspace or workshop, selecting a kit or building from scratch is all discussed. For those interested in radio control, equipment and running gear are covered, as are details of transport and operation. All warship modelers will benefit from discussions ranging from the creation of the myriad small details that bring ships to life, to painting and display. Steps are illustrated by model and prototype photography, and often supplemented by drawings

I found the extensive photography, both in black and white and color, of the ship models to be the highlight of the book. In addition to the exquisite ships made by the author, some of the very best examples of the model shipbuilder's art can be found, including shots of the magnificent Gibbs's and Cox models made for the US Navy. Particularly useful are the "in progress" pictures, as they enhance understanding of the building process. Just thumbing through the volume is an inspiration, and encourages a trip to the workshop.

An extensive reference section provides direction for further study on the subject, but the lack of an index is a weakness that could have been avoided. All in all this is a must have book for anyone interested in warships, and has a desire to build one themselves, or simply appreciates the work of outstanding craftsmen. Highly recommended.
