Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 4 A tidy old man spent his time cleaning up the litter that the thoughtless slobs of Wartville left behind. One day, tired of his lot, he gives up, and Mother Nature gives him ``power over trash.'' He then commands that litter ``go back and stick to the person who threw you.'' The townspeople are dismayed, and the Wizard agrees to release them from their trash if they promise not to litter again. Madden's ecology lesson is humorous, and his breezy, colorful illustrations add to the comic and trash-laden predicament in which the citizens of Wartville find themselves. Good for story hour and for reinforcing basic ecology principles, this book will be enjoyed by independent readers and by story hour groups. Gayle D. Celizic, Roosevelt School, Cleveland

5.0 out of 5 stars The Wartville Wizard-Good story, great lesson, March 30, 2000
This review is from: The Wartville Wizard (Paperback)
I recently read this book to a five-year-old little boy who absolutely loved the book. He was intrigued by the pictures (especially the lady with the garbage stuck to her rear-end)and kept finding "clues" to how the story would end. He really enjoyed the plot and the humor. The Warville Wizard spurred on great conversations about litter and pollution. The only downfall is that the book doesn't go into why you shouldn't litter other than for the asthetic value of a clean world. But overall, this was a super book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very creative storyline., June 8, 2008
This review is from: The Wartville Wizard (Paperback)
This seems to be a book that has gotten swept under the rug in the past years nowhere have I ever heard about it or seen it and I think I figured out why. The story is great its perfect for teaching young minds about the importance of recycling and keeping Mother earth clean and happy but it needs a little updating and tweaking. Mr. Wartville has many problems with the people of his town to put it frankly their slobs! but in the story the author who probably wrote this in the 80's when we weren't as "P.C" about everything uses terms like "cigarette butts" and "beer cans" and then you see some slop with his garbage stuck to him and its a smashed up beer can. I guess if the children are older and your kids are well aware of those two items you wouldn't mind those references but for me it made me wince a little. Otherwise a story with a good lesson!
