Editorial Reviews

Review

Mitch Ryder is one of rock and roll's great unsung heroes, and his story has been criminally untold or at least under-told until now. It Was All Right may take its title from a Lou Reed lyric, but it captures the development of one of rock's great voices and great personalities, a ride alongside a career of dizzying ups and downs that has nevertheless maintained dignity and passion. Anyone who reads this will start chanting Where's Mitch?! along with everybody else who thinks Ryder's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is overdue. --Gary Graff, award-winning music journalist and editor of The Ties That Bind: Bruce Springsteen A to E to Z

I'm grateful for this inside view of the life and times of Mitch Ryder. It's a story that needed to be told and should be required reading for all young musicians. If you think a hit record will deliver you to a good life, think again. Such is the great lie of fame. This book is the truth of fame for 99.99% of those who achieve it. Mitch's struggle for fulfillment and dignity in the modern culture industry is a warning for all who choose it. Not that anyone should be discouraged from a life in the arts, but be aware, it's no walk in the park. That Ryder is still singing in his wonderful, deeply soulful voice is a gift to us all. That he's told his cautionary tale is even better. --Wayne Kramer, composer and lead guitarist of the MC5

Whether the soundtrack of your early years included Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels or if you're new to American pop culture of the volatile 1960s and 1970s, It Was All Right will galvanize you. It s an intimate, spot-on look at the world of rock, celebrity, and Detroit's continuing contribution to world culture. --Loren D. Estleman, author of numerous books including American Detective, Nicotine Kiss, and Amos Walker s Detroit

5.0 out of 5 stars The rock-and-roll lifestyle of the second half of the twentieth century, July 10, 2008
This review is from: It Was All Right: Mitch Ryder's Life in Music (Painted Turtle Books) (Hardcover)
The rock-and-roll lifestyle of the second half of the twentieth century the was the hectic lifestyle that so many people want to live. "It Was All Right: Mitch Ryder's Life in Music" follows famed artist Mitch Ryder as he relates his life story of nearly half a century in the music industry, making over 8,000 performances. Ryder's biography is well-written and enthralling, sprinkled with great road stories, and highly recommended for community library music collections as well as to any fan of the man himself.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Flawed Tribute, December 8, 2008
By
This review is from: It Was All Right: Mitch Ryder's Life in Music (Painted Turtle Books) (Hardcover)
Author James Mitchell obviously has a deep well of respect for Mitch Ryder. This respect is not only for his brand of blue-eyed soul, but for Ryder's later self-penned work. But this bio is flawed in many ways. A fact checker would have helped (Mitchell has Mike Bloomfield as a member of the Blues Project and writes of rock festivals occurring that never got off the ground). His timeline is erratic as events skip forward and backwards - years at a time - with little transition. Too much is made of Ryder's post-Detroit Wheels years, as crucial as they may be to many. Mitchell should be given his props for finding a publisher to put out Mitch's bio, but until Mitch finishes his long-promised autobiography fans will have to settle for Mitchell's earnest, but flawed, book.

This review is from: It Was All Right: Mitch Ryder's Life in Music (Painted Turtle Books) (Hardcover)
I have been a Mitch Ryder fan sinsce the 1960's. To this end, I was excited when I heard about this book. It filled in a lot of the blanks as to why this very talented man seemed to de-rail at various times in his career. It's all there in black and white. It Was All Right: Mitch Ryder's Life in Music (Painted Turtle Books)
