Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

When Yancey couples his vibrant curiosity with his felicitous style and then begins reflecting on everything under the sun, the result is a collection of stimulating observations bound to nudge and encourage a reader's own reflective powers. Yancey first turns his gaze on societal issues, but by the end of the 45th short, terse chapter (all of which appeared originally in a column in the magazine Christianity Today) , he has touched on the fields of history, psychology, science, religion, and ethics, winding up with observations on the inner life. Yancey manages superbly to avoid the trite when he poses questions for his own and others' consideration. Yet his book is imbued with a quality of profound faith. Enthusiastically recommended.

More About the Author

I worked for 10 years as an Editor and then Publisher for Campus Life magazine. There I learned journalistic skills (there's no tougher audience than teenagers), but every year it seemed I wrote fewer and fewer words. In 1980 my wife Janet and I moved to downtown Chicago where I began a career as a freelance writer. (She has worked as a social worker and hospice chaplain--which gives me plenty of material to write about!) We lived there until 1992, when we moved to the foothills of Colorado. I've written around 20 books, most of them still in print, thankfully. Three of them I coauthored with Dr. Paul Brand, who influenced me more than any single person. My own favorites are "Soul Survivor" and "Reaching for the Invisible God" because both of them forced me to dig deep and get personal. I'm a pilgrim, still "in recovery" from a bad church upbringing, searching for a faith that makes its followers larger and not smaller. I feel overwhelming gratitude that I can make a living writing about the questions that interest me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Of a God too vast to understand-thus vast enough to worship, November 13, 1998
This review is from: I Was Just Wondering (Paperback)
I am relieved that this book has been re-issued after several years of unavailability. This writing, using historical illustrations, gives chewable thoughts for those who question the reasoning - the existance - of the Master of the Universe. Yancy wonders the deep questions of the ages, leaving us with the thrilling realization that our God is incomprehensible - therefore; a God who can be worshipped. I highly recommend giving this book to those still in the thros of deciding on the existance or lordship of God.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gensis of Phil Yancey's Ideas, July 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: I Was Just Wondering (Paperback)
I Was Just Wondering is a collection of essays that Phil Yancey wrote for Christianity Today; he still writes the essays for the magazine. While I haven't read all of his books, I have read many. I read this book on my first sitting because I could see the genesis of his ideas for his other GREAT books (What is So Amazing About Grace, The Jesus I Never Knew, Where is God When it Hurts, etc.) So if you haven't read his other "true" books, read this book first. If you have read his other books, read this one as well. One sees that Yancey's ideas and theses are consistent, uplifting and God-inspired. I enjoyed the book and I am looking forward to reading Yaney's new book (The Bible Jesus Read).

5.0 out of 5 stars challenging, thought provoking, usable, February 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: I Was Just Wondering (Paperback)
I bought this book thinking that it would be totally different. As a matter of fact I considered returning it upon first flipping through. I'm really glad that I didn't send it back. It was the most thought provoking book I have ever read. It totally challenged my Christian attitude and hopefully has made me better.
