Book Description

November 2, 2011
From 1986 until its closure, Chris Limb ran the official Toyah Willcox Fan Club Tellurian as well as designing and selling merchandise during Toyah's extensive tours in the early nineties.

This is not that story.

This is the story of what happened before. It began on a dark winter's night at the tail end of 1979 when a nerdy 14 year old boy watched an episode of the BBC's detective show Shoestring and realised that there was more to life than Blake's Seven/Star Wars crossover fanzines. . .

A marvellous read December 20, 2011
Format:Paperback
I wouldn't just recommend this book (highly) to Toyah fans, but also to anyone who lived through the 80s and appreciated the music of that era. It's a very personal story and one that speaks to all of us who had, in our teenage years, an obsession for a pop star. It's also a great journey through the teenage years and how emotions affect us during such a time of growth. What is most notable here is just how giving Toyah was to her fans back then and of how much she indulged their fandom and friendship, most probably in a manner that many other pop stars of the time failed to do. At times it's a funny read, at others an affecting and inspiring one. It's extremely well written and the author doesn't hold back on describing his motivations at the time (being all too aware that he is no longer that person but able to reflect back upon the he that once existed with both affection and honesty). Definitely recommended by me.

I was a teenage Toyah fan too! December 20, 2011
Format:Paperback
I read this book often with my mouth open as parts of it reflected how I felt growing up discovering Toyah myself. I am a similar age to Chris and although our lives have been quite different, his views on this vibrant artist almost felt identical to mine. I have been a massive fan of Toyah since I saw her on the 'Little Girls Don't' TV drama (as well as Shoestring, which Chris mentions in detail in this book). 'I Was A Teenage Toyah Fan' is a compelling read, a book which is written with passion and honesty. Chris avoids the need to worship every tiny detail of Toyah's life (his review of the album Minx is refreshing and genuine), making for a direct and heartfelt account of his fan status. I didn't want it to finish, but when it did I still felt as if Chris would follow it up later on in life. With Toyah's recent concert foray into her early albums, and some interesting work ahead, I sincerely hope this is the case. A brilliant read.

Honest, absolutely honest book, written by an adult who looks back at how he grew up. And stunningly deep, in the way real deep things are: by hints, more than by loud declarations. Worth reading even if you do not give a heck about the subject.
