Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-8-In this thorough title, readers discover Irving's passion, indeed his lifelong need to write in spite of the low esteem with which his father viewed this profession. To try to please him, Irving studied law and dealt with business, but he felt imprisoned by these endeavors. Traveling became a passion as well, and many of his writings deal with descriptions of his experiences in England and Spain and in the diplomatic service. Collins has written a serviceable selection that will fulfill report needs and give students an understanding of the influences on Irving's work, including his love of the Hudson River area and its folklore. Black-and-white reproductions appear throughout.

From Booklist

This biography from the World Writers series introduces Washington Irving. Best known today as the author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle," Irving received great acclaim in his own time for a range of literary works, including personal essays, biographies, and histories. Collins' succinct biography gives a sense of Irving's personality as well as his personal history and public accomplishments. Illustrated with many reproductions of portrait paintings, photographs, and plates from early editions of his books, the book provides a short, readable summary of the man and his work.
