THE manual to carry in the ICU,
By
This review is from: The Washington Manual of Critical Care (Paperback)
I have been in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine practice for 9 years. This is the best ICU manual that I have come across. The material is thorough and up to date. At the same time, the authors & editors have kept it concise by using numerous tables and algorithms. Almost every aspect of ICU care was addressed. It is very hard to explain in words what a tremendous amount of information was put in such a neat, handy & easy-to-read manual. One has to really see and use this book to appreciate the great work. I recommend this book to anyone who works in medical ICUs.

I used it daily in my ICU months. I used it in the Emergency Room. I used it on the floor. I literally use it all the time. I don't care any other books or any other guides... just the Wash Manual of Critical Care. Aside from a Sanford's antibiotic guide, it's the only must-have book for a medical intern.

this is the perfect manual for use in the ICU. full of tables covering algorithms. covers most of the problems that might be encountered in critical care patients. this is definitely slanted more towards the medical ICU type patients as opposed to surgical patients. therefore i found it more useful for my MICU rotation. however the basics are the same for SICU and MICU, airway management, shock, sepsis, vents, ID issues, renal failure etc.
very happy with this purchase

Sometimes too short.,

The book is ok, but sometimes it lets you down when you need some important things, such as, some rate infusions, ideal serum concentration of drugs, dosis, etc...You just can find basic ones, but when you need some other useful drugs, as Clonidine, you will not find them there. The algorithms are sometimes a bit confusing...If you are already the King at the ICU, and you just need to check up some little things, go for it, but if you are a resident, or still getting used to the rhythm, forget about it, you need something more consistant, which gives you a background to understand what's going on.

I found this book very helpful on a recent ICU rotation, especially for its well-thought out and concise algorithms of commonly encountered ICU problems.

I compare this to the General Washington manual.
This critical care compilation is an actual book, whereas the manual is a jumbled up mess of notes thrown together by some residents every few years. This was actually thought out. Needless to say, I am please with this book to supplement me on ICU rotations |
