Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Weighing less than a pair of wool socks, this guide is your ticket to backcountry access in Washington's national parks, forests, and wilderness areas. After knocking off pertinent questions concerning permits, user fees, the increasingly necessary trail-park pass, and the use of topographic maps--as well as providing an overview of wilderness ethics, regulations, and considerations--the rest of this utilitarian volume devotes itself to each of seven major regions, including the Olympic Peninsula and San Juan Islands, the North Cascades and Glacier Peak areas, and Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier. Each sublisting begins with a general description of the location and directions on how to get there. If there is an Internet site for a location, the address is provided. Specific regulations/restrictions are then given both "at-a-glance" and in greater detail below. Roadside campgrounds (site numbers and prices included), nearest services, ranger stations/information centers, and emergency contacts are also supplied. Other welcome features in this handy publication are the many bold and bulleted lists, including "Bear Essentials," "Use Horse Sense in the Backcountry," and "Knobby Rules" (subtitled "The Mountain Biker's Emily Post"). Finally, a useful reference section supplies idle campers with ample opportunity for trivia questions ("Washington's 100 Highest Peaks") along with a convenient directory of important addresses and phone numbers. A valuable compilation.
