Book Description

January 1, 2006
This Comedy, which was produced by its author the year after the performance of 'The Clouds,' may be taken as in some sort a companion picture to that piece. Here the satire is directed against the passion of the Athenians for the excitement of the law-courts, as in the former its object was the new philosophy. And as the younger generation-the modern school of thought-were there the subjects of the caricature, so here the older citizens, who took their seats in court as jurymen day by day, to the neglect of their private affairs and the encouragement of a litigious disposition, appear in their turn in the mirror which the satirist holds up.-From the introduction to 'The Wasps' by Aristophanes.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"As a first introduction to Aristophanes this lively edition may be warmly recommended. The detailed commentary is lucid and concise, witty and intelligent. MacDowell scrutinizes each problem with genuine interest and never loses sight of the stage....Especially valuable are his notes on prosopography. The technical details of the law courts are clearly elucidated and the metrical analyses presented with elegance and good taste."--Classical Review

2.0 out of 5 stars By the Gods! This is rubbish!, January 27, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Wasps (Paperback)
What is this? This edition looks although it was printed from Microsoft notepad. Every other line of the text has no more than 3 words, as if it were quite carelessly copied and pasted so that it's not even continuous text. Its rife with typos and spelling errors. Page numbers are missing. And the cover is so ugly it makes my eyes bleed! The person who put this together should be dragged before the Heliaia and administered a hefty fine! As for me, I am throwing this away in the rubbish bin!
