This 1982 album of Roedelius is a mix of his elegant piano playing and his more experimental electronic music (like his 1980 album 'Offen Turin') with some jazzy overtones courtesy of talented saxophonist A. Czjzek. There are upfront and out there electronic rhythmic excursions and also dreamy drifting keyboard pieces (more like his beautiful 1981 album Lustwandel). It is definitely better produced than his lo fi Self Portrait series of albums from the late 70's having Eric S.- Marlyn on board producing & also playing electric guitar & bass. So although the album is quiet eclectic mixing various styles it is also quite unified due to Roedelius's thematic keyboard skills. The whole album is instrumental & if you like ambient music with more of an edge, this album is made for you. I actually somehow missed this album at the time & was getting disappointed that Roedelius was going too 'new age' and losing his experimental edge, which he returned to fortunately in the late 80's & especially with his reunion with Moebius & Cluster.
As A. Tietchens remarks 'Wasser im Wind no longer is it the past, nor is it quite the future. It is the perfect blend of his future ambient phase and past avant garde electronic style with some subtle jazzy embellishments . It is a great addition to his amazing recording career. If you like this you may also enjoy a contemporary keyboard composer K. Kriesel. Why 4 instead of 5 stars, mostly because I find Cluster albums & the more experimental Roedelius albums more innovative and exciting but this is still a sonically rich and texturally well produced album, 4/5
