Let's Get Wasted!,

This review is from: Alice in Wasteland (DVD)
Here's an incredibly entertaining no-budget feature that came out of nowhere! Mixing satirical B-movie conventions with a stylish, revenge-driven plot, Alice in Wasteland is a real trip down the rabbit-hole. After a poorly executed robbery goes predictably bad, trailer-park denizen Alice (Roxane Sondrup) is shot and left for dead, only to wake up from a coma a year later. Now, with a partner she picked up in jail, they're tearing through the streets, and a determined dirty cop (Michelle Beisner, a former Denver Broncos cheerleader) will stop at nothing to retire them. The box compares it to a Carl Hiaasen novel, but I'll go one further and say it's more reminiscent of a great Elmore Leonard yarn. Can't ask for more than that!

Crime Never Looked So Good!,
By Brian Harris "WildsideCinema" (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Alice in Wasteland (DVD)
Alice in Wasteland is a low budget exploitation production overflowing with pimps, prostitutes, dirty cops, prison bulldaggers, strangle-happy Swiss maids, rednecks, drug dealers, crazed crackheads and girls-with-guns. It was an entertaining smorgasbord of sleaze, intentional and unintentional comedy and oodles of violence. The production values were solid considering the obvious budgetary constraints so you ought to enjoy the wardrobe (not too outrageous), shooting locations (a real jail & hospital) and the groovy, funkadelic music.
Directors Jarvi and Schuermann were able to throw in little bits and pieces from all kinds of exploitation subgenres, which was really cool, including Blaxploitation, W.I.P. cinema and even a little Kung Fu style action involving an iron. There was an instance or two in which I started wondering whether the film was going to end up being full-on comedy but, thankfully, they didn't go that route and played it relatively straight with a little comedy sprinkled throughout. I must admit, without knowing where the homage ends and usual amateur acting begins, it's really hard to judge the performances here but my overall impression was that everybody put in their fair share of effort. I laughed out loud quite a few times, juked to the music and came away from this flick with a smile on my face. That's all I ask for in most cases. Now I don't think I'd purchase this for my own collection but in my opinion it's worth renting.

exploitative obnoxious and offensive = a recipe that entertains, if you're the right audience,

If you're looking for an artistic, meaningful independent movie that will stir your soul ... search elsewhere. But if you're looking for something that pokes fun at the conventional - like a stick in the eyeball - chock-full with sarcasm, tongue-in-cheekiness, and featuring an amazingly beautiful virtually all-female main cast - well, this might suit you. It is certainly a 'love it or hate it' movie. If you love 'Eat Pray Love,' you will likely hate it. If you hate 'Eat Pray Love,' you will likely love it! Have fun!
