Book Description

October 16, 2001 Watch Me Grow
Every Parent's Guide to the Lively & Challenging 24- to 36-Month-Old

This second groundbreaking volume in the acclaimed age-specific childcare series helps turn the "terrible twos" into a terrific, joyous experience for parents and their two-year-old children.

Your two-year-old is less dependent on your "teaching" and more in charge of his learning than ever before. While problem solving and mastery of skills will be his major agenda for this year, improving verbal, physical, and emotional skills make him seem more capable than he really is. There's a big difference between saying "I do it" and being able to do it!) In short, the need to establish his own identity by getting his way may prove more frustrating than adorable at times. Caregivers need to see his efforts as valuable experimentation -- not defiance -- and support this exciting growth.

Incorporating cutting-edge research about twenty-four- to thirty-six-month-old children, Dr. O'Brien highlights how the world looks and feels to them during this time of rapid development. With a delightful mix of the latest scientific findings and true-life stories, O'Brien demonstrates how to listen, observe, and relate to children in ways that enhance not only their growth but the entire family's as well.

This remarkable series differs from others becauseit includes the incomparable wisdom and experience of actual parentsit translates the newest research on the development of a young child's brainit provides guidance for dealing with toddler willpower by exploring two-year-olds' unparalleled burst in language and complex emotional growth

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

O'Brien, a pediatric research associate at Harvard Medical School, and her coauthor Tippins (Watch Me Grow: I'm One) continue their exploration of early childhood development in this new volume. Pointing out that problems arising after the second birthday are often the result of a mismatch between parents' expectations and children's abilities (the result of which is impatience on the parents' part and frustration for the toddler), the authors set out to clarify all that a two-year-old can and cannot do. In well-stocked chapters, they cover the two-year-old's physical, cognitive, emotional and social development, with useful charts summarizing the child's milestones and space for "readers comments" so parents can mark their child's progress. Parents will find plenty of information on such classic toddler topics as preschool separation, aggression, social skills and the importance of routines, with the focus on why toddlers behave the way they do and how parents can best provide support, limits and encouragement. While many parents may shore up their disciplinary resources in anticipation of the "terrible twos," the idea, O'Brien explains, is to give the toddler a chance to control her own environment, while leading her toward positive new experiences. O'Brien's upbeat, rational outlook brings the toddler's growth and development into clear focus so that parents will be better prepared to weather the "stormy and unpredictable" moments and enjoy their two-year-old's unique charms. 25 b&w photos.

More About the Author

One mom, many ideas....

Maureen O'Brien (Dr. Mo to her friends) may have a Ph.D. in Child Psychology, but her credentials as the mother of 16-year old twin boys are just as important to her. She has dedicated her career to helping parents -- and those who work with families of young children -- to feel empowered, valued and less stressed out.

"Parenting is certainly challenging, but it should be joyful as well", Dr. O'Brien notes. "In today's busy world, parents often feel lost or in need of guidance as they make choices that influence their families. If I can help them feel good about these choices or reduce their anxiety, then I feel like I've done my job."

Her acclaimed book, Watch Me Grow: I'm One-Two-Three (available on Amazon.com) is one way she reaches out to parents. She is also a frequent speaker on parenting issues in today's society. Whether she's addressing one parent's questions or tackling wider trends in parenting and child development on radio or TV, her down-to-earth, approachable style resonates with parents and professionals alike.

Her latest book (2010) is Advantage, Mom: 20 Tips from a Parenting Pro, available exclusively on www.destinationparenting.com.

In 2007, she launched a website, www.destinationparenting.com, which is dedicated to providing information and resources to parents and those who work with them. As a parenting coach, she does home visits with families, holds consults via Skype and hosts seminars on parenting topics galore.

This review is from: Watch Me Grow, I'm Two: Every Parent's Guide to the Lively and Challenging 24- to 36-Month-Old (Hardcover)
Of all the parenting books out there, this one is head and shoulders above the rest. It addresses the ever evolving nature of children, how they learn at various stages, how to cope and facilitate healthy development of your child. Dr. O'Brien offers so many positive "how t(w)o's" that I found the book to be a pleasure to read. I only hope she will continue to write this age evolving series into the teen years! Bravo!!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Information is not easily accessible, November 16, 2001

This review is from: Watch Me Grow, I'm Two: Every Parent's Guide to the Lively and Challenging 24- to 36-Month-Old (Hardcover)
This book seems to be more of a case study than a guide for busy parents. I am struggling with the book's layout. When I do find guidance and information, it has been excellent. However, I find the book difficult to access. While the stories do sound very similar to what I am experiencing with my own 2 year old, I do not have the time or energy to sift through the story to interpret the message. I need a book that's a little more straightforward and the guidance a little easier to find.
