Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Stacey Arrow makes her debut in this first book of the New Kids at the Polk Street School series, about Mrs. Zachary's kindergartners and their trials and tribulations, both as individuals and as part of a class. Stacey's first day isn't quite as terrific as she had imagined, but she does manage to zero in on Jiwon as a potential best friend, with Eddie and A.J. as runners-up. She intimidates her would-be friends with her frank comments, shoving behavior and frightening stories of her man-eating snake (a favorite stuffed animal). Emily (from the original Polk Street School series) counsels her sister on the best way to go about making and being a friend, and her advice steers Stacey in the right direction. This story will find favor with kindergartners, at least those who can read novel-length books. But the first and second graders who will find the length no problem may choose not to read about children younger than themselves. Ages 5-8.

From the Publisher

Stacy Arrow's first day of school isn't going well at all. She was only trying to help when she told Jiwon, the girl with the black hair, that her drawing of herself looked like a cow. And she didn't mean to scare her with stories about man-eating snakes. Now Jiwon refuses to be Stacy's best friend. What's Stacy doing wrong?

"You have to be nice to a friend," says Stacy's sister Emily, and suddenly Stacy knows what she has to do. But can her plan win her a best friend? Snakes or no snakes, Stacy's ready to try her hardest.

This series came out when I was in 6th grade and I read them all. They were cute, about the kindergarteners at Polk St School. However these characters are not very well established. For instance, it was supposed to be a new year at Polk St, but Emily and Richard and the older kids were still in Ms. Rooney's 2nd grade class. If you have read any of the original Polk St books about Emily, you will notice that Stacy, Emily's little sister, wasn't in school then, when Emily was in Ms. Rooney's room. I found this inconsistant, but the story is well written.
