The greatest CD I have - Watch Me Fly is inspirational, July 14, 2004
This review is from: Watch Me Fly (Audio CD)
There is no cd that plays more in my home - I have passed along the music of Talisman throughout my entire family and friends. The range of melodies throughout the cd keeps me completely engrossed and devoted to their music. It's one of few cds where I listen to every song and then repeat the entire cd. The music is rich, the voices are serene, and the message is sincere and powerful. The only thing better is hearing Talisman in person - I am truly addicted. God bless each member of their group and their music. Talisman's #1 fan :)

Contemporary A Cappella Award and RARB review, May 8, 2004

Contemporary A Cappella Awards: 2004 Winner Best Mixed Collegiate Album Recorded A Cappella Review Board(RARB): The Stanford Talisman's website contains praises from Bill Clinton and the director of the St. Olaf Choir, and it's no wonder. Maybe this is my classical training showing through, but to be perfectly honest, Watch Me Fly is quite possibly the best collegiate a cappella album I have ever heard. - Tom Czerwinski Talisman's new album celebrates the glory of folk music, taking its strengths and weaknesses on a marvelous journey. - Rebecca Christie Any fan of world music would do well to get a copy of this CD. It's simply an absolute treat. Talisman has earned yet another distinction: they are the only a cappella group that's earned two albums in my iPod. Keep doing what you do; I'm looking forward to what you create next. - Bernard Levin

More of the Same Great Stuff from Talisman, April 21, 2010
This review is from: Watch Me Fly (Audio CD)
Talisman, Watch Me Fly, 2003
Unlike another reviewer, I cannot say this is the best, or even my favorite Talisman album. That's the bad news. The good news is that this one is every bit as good as all the others I've bought and heard. It has the same well-varied mix of material representing what the group calls the 'African Disapora', meaning that there are lyrics and styles from around the world. They can probably be forgiven for concentrating on central and south Africa, plus the US. If I miss anything at all, it may be samples of how African modalities were transmuted into the styles of South America. I am also surprised that they don't touch on reggae too closely.
But that's neither here nor there. What is here is very, very good. I'm especially fond of 6. Sum'Bulala and 8. Wahjeeleh-Yihn which, to my untrained ear, seem to have distinct precursors in it African languages to the Na'vi language invented for Avatar.
I give the selection special credit for including one, but no more than one 'downer' song, 5. Strange Fruit, from the post-Civil War southern black experience.
One last advice is to save yourself the time it takes to read these reviews, and if you have heard one Talisman album you like, get them all.
