5.0 out of 5 stars Watch Out for the Big Girls
The book dicusses the feelings that most big women have in life and in relationships. Full Figured and Freaky is da bomb! I like how all the stories have big girl names, "Full-Figured and Freaky", "Big & Beautiful", etc.

I wish there were more books dedicated to the Big girls! I loved it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Tribute to the Big Girls, October 24, 2004
This review is from: Watch Out for the Big Girls! (Paperback)
Let's hear it for the big girls! I've always been plump, thick, plentiful, or whatever you want to call a person who surpasses the single digit clothes sizes, but I've never read a book that celebrates big and beautiful women. Author L. Edwards has written this type of a tribute to big girls everywhere. Watch Out for the Big Girls! should be read, cherished, and shared with both family and friends of all sizes.

In the author's much too short collection of poetry, short stories, and thoughts, the reader is given a view into the world of big women. Ms. Edwards clearly shows that regardless of size, these women have feelings, desires, and dreams just as their slimmer counterparts. It is not only a tribute, but also a declaration of acceptance, self-worth, and pride -- all in being a big girl. My favorite part of this collection is the short story entitled "Big & Beautiful" which focuses on the dating scene, how men react to bigger women, both in public and in private, and how a woman's self-esteem can be affected by her weight.

While I enjoyed Watch Out for the Big Girls, it would have been better if Ms. Edwards would have added more stories to complement the theme The book was much too small and seemed to be rushed.

This review is from: Watch Out for the Big Girls! (Paperback)
There's a Baltimore Club song called "Watch Out For the Big Girl" that came to mind when I first glanced at the title of this book. I remember being in a dance club and loving when this song came on, as it encouraged women of all shapes and sizes to get out on the dance floor and show their stuff. L. Edwards brings to mind this same feeling in WATCH OUT FOR THE BIG GIRLS.

In this compilation of short stories, poems, and musings, L. Edwards drives home the point that big girls have feelings, desires, and emotions, just as much as their lithe counterparts. Edwards conveys the message throughout this little gem that full-figured women should be respected, cherished, and seen as beautiful in their own rights.

Some of the standout entries include the linked poetic lists "Weight Discrimination" and "Weight Appreciation." In the former the author lists the derogatory names plus-sized women endure and in the latter counters these with appreciative and much less stinging adjectives. Also included is a short story told in multiple parts, entitled "B&B", which I assumed to mean "Big and Beautiful." The story related the experience of a full-figured woman and her dating adventures.

L. Edwards puts it down for the big girls in a way that is not generalizing or stereotypical. Instead, the author's pieces project respect, appreciation, and courage for all of the sassy, sexy sisters known as Big Girls. I did, ironically, think the book was too skimpy and thin, and that it could have used more meat.
