Book Description

May 21, 2002
As Bishop Seraphim Sigrist says in his heartfelt introduction, Watch and Pray is “a landmark anthology of Christian reflection on prayer, past and present,” as described by Christians of every persuasion over the last two thousand years.

In this companion volume to Ordinary Graces: Christian Teachings on the Interior Life Lorraine Kisly sounds the great themes of Christian prayer—praise, supplication, thanksgiving, willingness, repentance, and purification. She raises the difficulties we all experience—self-will, fear, blindness, ignorance—and their remedies.

The sequenced passages reflect on one another and gradually reveal a community intimately united in powerful and sanctifying experience. A collection of great depth, richness, and variety, Watch and Pray again and again opens out to include us in this great current of Christian prayer. From Abraham of Nathpar in the sixth century to the wonderful contemporary Cistercian André Louf, from poet William Butler Yeats to Patrick, saint of Ireland—each of the men and women, mystics and monks, Presbyterians and Dominicans, Syrians and Swiss calls us to the path of prayer meant for every Christian.

“If this book is read truly,” Bishop Seraphim concludes, “the reader will surely find the beginning of prayer itself, and this is to open another book with no end at all.”

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Again and again, the same peace, the same stillness, the same quality of focused attention. Even the skeptical reader begins to believe that they are not talking about nothing, these voices so widely scattered in place and time. As for the bold reader, she begins to consider trying it.” -- Jack Miles, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning God: A Biography

Watch and Pray is not a book to be read, but a book to be savored. Beautifully structured, it leads us through twelve cycles to the very heart of prayer. Our companions along the way are the great voices of the Christian tradition, past and present, some well-known and some new acquaintances. Each page, indeed paragraph, invites lingering and prayerful pondering.” -- Margaret Guenther, author of The Practice of Prayer

“Lorraine Kisly has cast her net far and wide, and the catch is heavy, but the boat isn’t swamped. A wonderful generosity of spirit animates this anthology.” -- John Wilson, editor of Christianity Today and editor in chief of Books & Culture

“This powerful collection of writings on prayer from such a wide background of thought and experience bears a timeless quality for such a time as now. As the hearts and minds of the world turn to God, the power of these writings will bring peace to their hearts and wisdom to their way, for here, in these passages, we discover how the path to the future runs through the road of the past.”Dr. Robert E. Webber, translator and editor of The Prymer: The Prayer Book of the Medieval Era Adapted for Contemporary Use

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Page is a Gift, July 3, 2002

This review is from: Watch and Pray: Christian Teachings on the Practice of Prayer (Hardcover)
While I found Ordinary Graces to be not at all ordinary (other than that it related to me) and totally eye opening, Watch and Pray is entirely soul opening. Ms. Kisly has done all the grunt work so that I can sit back and perceive in absolute awe the connectedness and global universality of God's gift of the holy spirit and the power of prayer - not only in me but in everyone in and of all ages. Every cycle, indeed every page is a gift. I am deeply grateful for Ms. Kisly's phenomenally successful endeavor.

This review is from: Watch and Pray: Christian Teachings on the Practice of Prayer (Hardcover)
Excellent book which provides some of the most meaningful information that I have encountered on Christian prayer. Reading the contributions here has created in me a desire to go back to the sources and read more deeply. Along with this there is much to reflect on in this volume. A very worthwhile addition to the bookshelf of a committed Christian.
