Raw, rockin' Garage/Punk/Soul,
By Dave Lang (Coburg, VIC Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Watch for Today (Audio CD)
It's beyond comprehension why some reviewers here have complained about the fidelity of this release. Fer chrissakes, it's on In The Red, it features Garage God Tim Kerr, and it's unashamedly RAW ROCK'N'ROLL, so what the hell did you expect? Emerson, Lake and Palmer?! If you want soul-less, clinical slickness to your music, then stick to your Matchbox 20 and Dave Matthews Band CDs...Ahem, the NTD, featuring folks from the Bellrays, Lord High Fixers, Jack O'Fire, etc. are an amazing combo who rip out a highly derivitive yet intoxicating blend of tough mod-rock, '60s soul and garage crunch, all blended up with a real 21st century punk rock delivery. Half of the songs are actually covers - from Curtis Mayfield's Impressions to a rare King Floyd b-side (the awesome "Handle With Care") - the other half being some exceptional Tim Kerr originals, all combining to make a winning collection that was certainly one of my fave party discs of 2001. If you're at all partial to the Texan garage scene (spearheaded mostly by Mr. Kerr himself), or the In The Red "sound" (raw no-BS rock'n'roll) or perhaps a sonic mix of the Who, MC5, Stones, Curtis, Sly Stone, Booker T. and Ann Peebles, then this disc will likely float yer boat.

I Love it!,
By MeMyselfandIggy (New Orleans, La United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Watch for Today (Audio CD)
I love this cd for all that it is. It is a great group of musicians and a GRRRREAT singer matched with a cool production. I heard this for the first time in a bar (El Matador in New Orleans) and I flipped out. I loved it that night, bought it the next day and still love it now. I can't wait to hear more from this band and I would give a listen to ANYTHING that Lisa Kekaula sings on or anything that Tim Kerr produced. Period.

Amazing sound.,

I could not believe how good this album was when heard it. It's a very 60's sounding soul-rock project with a punk edge to it. The sound quality is a little lo-fi, which makes it sound more authentic, but it's new and it's good. One of the comparisons I read that i liked was what if Tina Turner sat in with the Stones of '67-68... This is probably the best CD of 2001.

CD THAT SOUNDS LIKE A TAPE!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Watch for Today (Audio CD)
The music has a nice edge. Good singer. It's more Tina Turner than Detroit Cobras. Unfortunately, I also agree with other reviewers who note the clearly deficient sound quality. So much hiss on some songs that it's hard to enjoy them.

SOUL-PUNK-EXTRAVAGONZO!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Watch for Today (Audio CD)
Holy moly, this is thee real article. This is classic Stax era soul music as upadted by some punk rock era musicians that know how to play and know how to sing. If you're a fan of the Detroit Cobras you should definitely check this out because this is what the Cobras are aiming for only they fall FAR short of this. Lisa (also vocalist for the Bellrays) is the best vocalist there is!!!

Soul with a punk twist,
By Coldsnap (Machida-Shi Japan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Watch for Today (Audio CD)
Another amazing record by Tim Kerr. This time he reaches back to the 60's, grabs some great old soul songs and re-hashes them with just enough raw energy to make them sound like his own Garage/Punk style. This was my favourite album of last year. A must have for any music fan.

I can't believe out of all the things they could say about this album, these other reviewers choose to complain about the sound quality of the CD. Ok, sure, it's a little rough sounding, but who cares!? I listen for the music, not the technical details.I can't begin to express how much soul this album posesses. With a mishmash of artists from other bands, I think they've created one of the most perfect bands on the planet. Soul, funk, groove, love. This album has it all, and I'm glad I heard it. If you're only looking for crisp and clean CDs to add to your collection, you won't find it here. If you're looking for music with substance (and dang can the lead singer wail), this is for you. Beautiful.

Awful sound,

It sounds like my kids recorded the band in our bathroom. The music is probably OK but it is hard to get past the really poor recording. Bought it because it seemed to get a good review in 'Stereophile'

Lo-Fi? How about NO-Fi...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Watch for Today (Audio CD)
I picked this one up by chance after scanning the liner notes and noticing the songs they covered. Hey, they name drop The Small Faces, Brian Auger, Booker T. etc etc...they even cover the mod classic "Bert's Apple Crumble"...it's gotta be good, right? WRONG! The singer obviously has some talent, but the rest of it was really painful. The production is horrible, and the guitar sounds out of tune! It was PAINFUL! I actually took it back to the store and returned it within an hour of the purchase. Is this what they mean about "updating" classics with "punk energy"? To me, it's just masquerading or disguising the fact that if they tried straight up cover versions they would fall on their faces. Well they did anyway. Seriously folks, if you like any of the artists mentioned above, AVOID THIS, it's a complete pile of _ _ _ _.
