Devon Mitchell is being haunted by the death of his ex-girlfriend. To get himself together, he goes to his uncle's farm. After being there for a few months, he decides that it's time to get back to reality. After receiving some unsettling news about the art gallery his grandmother left him, he makes a detour to D.C. When he arrives, he is met with opposition from acting gallery director Jayde Seaton. Jayde has a lot of questions and not a lot of answers. She wants to know why someone (Devon) who obviously knows very little about the operations of an art gallery, could come in and steal her promotion. Along with that drama, someone is actually trying to sabotage the gallery. Devon has his hands full trying to get answers about what is going on and who is behind it. While all of this is happening, Jayde and Devon are trying to make sense of their budding attraction. The question is, can their new found relationship withstand the deception, half truths, and family drama?

Watch Your Back by Lisa Y. Watson is an excellent read. There is a wonderful mix of romance and mystery. Watson does a great job of combining the two genres. The plot as well as the primary and secondary characters are very well developed, and the author's writing style flows. Watson also does a great job of knowing how much to reveal and at what times to reveal it to keep you turning the pages. Great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspenseful Romance and Mystery, May 29, 2011
This review is from: Watch Your Back (Urban Soul Presents) (Mass Market Paperback)
Devon Mitchell hasn't been able to stop blaming himself for the death of his ex-girlfriend and put it behind him. Her death continues to haunt him. He escapes the constant media and others who won't leave him alone to heal by going to his uncle's farm to try to put his life back together and to rid himself of the guilt of his ex's death. After receiving some unsettling news about the art gallery his grandmother left him, he makes a detour to D.C., he decides that it's time to get back to reality after being at his uncles for several months. He is met with opposition from acting gallery director Jayde Seaton after he arrives in D.C. Their meeting is laced with drama that continues and even escalates when it is announced that Devon will be the director of the gallery, which is the position that was promised to Jayde. Jayde doesn't take the this news very well and she has lots of questions and not a lot of answers. She wants to know why someone who obviously knows very little about the operations of an art gallery, could come in and steal her promotion and she takes every opportunity to let him know his shortcomings. Jayde doesn't know that someone is actually trying to sabotage the gallery and for Devon all employees are potential suspects until he can eliminated them as being part of the sabotage, that includes Jayde. Devon has his hands full trying to get answers about what is going on and who is behind it, while Jayde and Devon are trying to make sense of their budding attraction. Things escalate even more for Devon goes after Jayde. More importantly, can their new found relationship withstand the deception, half truths, and family drama?

I just recently found this author and I will continue reading as she writes. This book Watch Your Back was such a good book. I read it in 2 days and hated to see it end! I want to know about X and what becomes of the couple as well. I really would like to see a sequel but I also realize sometimes the characters must go away. If so don't worry Lisa I will keep reading whatever you publish. You are definitely a talented writer and you have a fan for life. Keep up the good work!!!!!! Readers you will not be dissapointed in this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A rollercoaster love affair, March 30, 2011

This review is from: Watch Your Back (Urban Soul Presents) (Mass Market Paperback)
"Hello, everyone, I'd like to personally thank our lovely hostess for allowing me to interrupt what is by far the best party this town has seen in quite a while," Candace said into the microphone. Loud claps echoed around the room. Candace used the time to look for Devon. She spotted him through the crowd. He was staring at her with curiosity. Good. Emboldened, Candace placed the microphone to her mouth again. "I'm sure all of you know me by now, but in case some of you have never picked up a magazine or watched television, my name is Candace Monroe." Everyone in the audience roared with laughter, except the two men watching her from opposite sides of the room. Each wore a similar expression of anger. "I hope you all don't mind my brief interruption, but I have the most exciting news, and I can't contain myself any longer. You see I just found out my fiancé, Devon Mitchell, and I are expecting a baby! I'm just beside myself with joy," Candace cried with tears pooling in her eyes. The crowd went wild with applause and cheers. Across the room stood Candace's shocked and disgusted lover. Ignoring the condemnation in his eyes, Candace focused on her boyfriend. He looked murderous.

Candace Monroe has just informed her boyfriend and half the world that she was carrying an heir to the Mitchell estate. This wasn't exactly what Devon Mitchell had expected. The last time he had seen Candace it was understood that during his absence due to family business, she was to move out of their apartment by the time he returned home. What Devon didn't know was that Candace was actually carrying another man's child. But greed was a personal factor in everything Candace did and since the true father of her baby was nowhere near as wealthy as Devon, he became a secret that Candace planned to keep to herself. And all may have worked out as planned had it not been for the accident that took both her and her unborn child's lives.

Devon was at the wheel when he lost control of the car that killed Candace and "his" child. In the process of trying to get away from the pain as well as the reporters that camped out on his parent's lawn, he left, telling no one where he would be, and went to his Uncles farm. His stay with his Uncle Henry was disrupted when he found that "accidents" were threatening the stability of the art gallery he had inherited from his grandmother. Going into the gallery as an unknown he assumes the duties of the retired director. What he didn't expect to have to deal with was Jayde Seaton whom had been promised she would inherit the position. He also didn't expect to fall in love with her nor to have to protect her from someone who was doing their best to destroy her, the gallery and his whole family.

In Watch Your Back, Author Lisa Y. Watson takes you through the flair of tempers, which Devon and Jayde both have cornered the market on. You experience their intense love for each other and the love of a close family. The story had me raking my brain to determine who the real father of Candace's baby was, if he was the same person out to destroy Devon and his family and more importantly, why. Watch Your Back kept me on my toes and entertained throughout the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Defintely a Page-Turner But, January 23, 2011
This review is from: Watch Your Back (Urban Soul Presents) (Mass Market Paperback)
Too long and drawn out. The book was about 50 pages too long. Author is a good storyteller, characters well developed, and interesting storyline. I would have liked a little bit more creativity with the characters and story because it became predictable, but nonetheless, it was a good read.

Overall rating. 4.0

Watch Your Back pulled me quickly into the novel. I was fascinated by Lisa's imagination, extensive vocabulary and couldn't put the book down. I enjoyed it so much that I took it to a 90 yr. old nursing home resident, who reads four books per week, and she said. "That book was good."

Watch Your Back has romance. It has beautiful characters. It has drama and sexual tension. But it also has brains, twists and turns and a way of keeping you enthralled. Toward the end, I was turning the pages faster and faster, just so I could know how everything would together. And what a satisfying, unexpected ending it was! Watson really thought outside the box, penning a romance novel that was anything but elementary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!!!, May 25, 2010
This review is from: Watch Your Back (Urban Soul Presents) (Mass Market Paperback)
Watch Your Back was quite refreshing and I loved the characters. I liked the fact that Jayde wasn't a flawless and perfect woman. She was quite a character, not afraid to be herself and she was beautiful in her own right. Devon was not the typical ideological romance novel man in my opinion. He was very human and you could feel those emotions fly off the page. I liked how the two characters were connected with their families and friends giving the story a well rounded feel. The mothers in the books were real and in some ways reminded me of the warm companionship I share with mine. All the characters were well developed and the story had me guessing till the end. Ms. Watson really did a great job with the storyline and timing. It wound down quite nicely, tying up all loose ends and not leaving any plot holes.

All in all, I would recommend this book to my friends and family. Great job!! I can't wait to read more.
