Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In a distinctly Seussian meter, this story tells a cautionary tale of what befalls rude little Cecily when she ignores a friend’s warning that a stuck-out tongue might get stuck that way. What happens in Cecily’s case is that a bird builds a nest and lays her eggs on Cecily’s tongue, and the doctor declares the eggs need to hatch before he can help Cecily. When hatchlings do emerge, their very first act is to stick out their tongues at Cecily. Lesson learned. The bouncing rhythm of the text is well matched by Davis’ dynamic, detailed watercolor illustrations that add energy and laughs to the lessons. Cecily’s final solution to the trouble she has caused is a hand-lettered sign that moves the story’s main text into the artwork itself. An easy read-aloud that will result in lots of participation from the audience. Preschool-Grade 2. --Francisca Goldsmith

Watch Your Tongue, Cecily Beasley works well as a cautionary tale about the dangers of being mean, but it works even better as a fun filled, spirited read aloud that will no doubt elicit more than a few laugh out loud moments from any story time or classroom audience. The rhyming is note perfect, resulting in a book that has a great read aloud flow that often reaches Seussical proportions in its combination of whimsy and earnest message.

The illustrations perfectly portray Cecily's mean and disdainful attitude as we learn that "Cecily Beasley was never polite. She never said thank you, or please, or good night." She sticks out her tongue at teachers and friends, and we see her obvious shock and dismay when the Mockingbeak tounge-snatcher bird decides to come roost on her tongue which has become stuck because she was sticking it out too much.

The combination of seamless rhyming and vibrant illustrations make this an excellent choice as a read aloud, or for any youngster's personal collection. When you add the message that it pays to be nice and that even the meanest faces can be turned into smiles, you get a book that is truly memorable. This is a bit too long for group sharing with younger preschoolers, but I think it will be perfect for the kindergarten and first grade classrooms as a gentle fun reminder of the power of being polite.

Growing up my mother would tell me, "If you keep making mean faces eventually your face will stick that way!" In Cecily's case that happens to be true. This delightfully written and beautifully illustrated book will have everyone in stitches all the while teaching a lesson about manners and how your words can hurt. In this day and age when bullying makes national headlines on a weekly basis, this is a nice, fun way to begin teaching your children how to treat others with respect. This book is a MUST read for everyone. If Cecily can learn her lesson, I have faith we all can.

At some point during our childhood, we probably heard the phrase, "Don't stick out your tongue. It's going to get stuck like that."

Lane Fredrickson delivers a fresh and fun twist on this premise when a Mockingbeak Tongue-Snatching Bird spies an opportunity to make a cozy nest on little Cecily Beasley's constantly "stuck-out" tongue.

All sorts of hilarity ensues, as Cecily learns the value of friendship, manners, and patience in this rhyming romp of a story.

A very funny and fun-to-read-aloud picture book for kids, parents, and teachers!
