4.0 out of 5 stars Newsboys fans will love it, July 3, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Watching Over You (Audio CD)
The is Newsboys but then, not. The same wit and sense of fun is in many of the songs, but they have a very personal feeling about them. The title track, "God is Watching Over You" is a terrific song - one that will make you move, smile and think all at once. Many of the songs have that 'get stuck in your head' quality - I've found myself humming them at odd moments. I get the feeling that it is aimed at a very young crowd, but I am 42 and loved it, as did my teens - in fact we've bought 3 copies - one for each of us. Newsboys fans should certainly check it out, other Christian music fans, I think it's worth a look.

Part of the reason I like this Cd so much is because I feel like Phil has given us all a little piece of his heart. The title song, God is Watching Over You, is really great...it makes me want to get up and dance and praise the Lord! Strangely Normal makes me feel that it ok to be a little strange, yet normal at the same time.El Salvador, Fragile and Together are so good it makes me wanna cry.Other tracks like Author of Life, Tonight (Not Fading Away),It's You, My Generation, and Be Number One are fresh and bouncy.Overall this cd is joyful, and clearly Phil Joel has a sound all his own!

5.0 out of 5 stars you've got to hear this!!!!!!!!!, October 19, 2001

This cd is soooooooo good, you've got to hear it. If you don't you are denying your ears hours of listening pleasure! If you love The News Boys you will definately LOVE this one. There are some fast more up beat songs and some slower ones. It is hard to pick a favorite song as they are ALL so good. There was not one song that I didn't like! I would have to say that El Salvador, Tonight & My Generation are my favorites. My kids and I share our cd's and they always take this one!!! Well done Phil, I hope that there will be more to come in the future

5.0 out of 5 stars I DON'T LIKE CCM, BUT I LIKE THIS!!!!!!!!, October 26, 2002
This review is from: Watching Over You (Audio CD)
The Newsboys, who Phil Joel plays bass for, bring on rock music in their releases. Suprisingly, this is much on the calmer side, very CCMish. Even though I am a huge fan of the harder stuff, this is awesome!!!! Whodathunkit that Phil has such a good voice!!!

You don't have to skip over any songs on this CD, they're all good. Its done in a flash (33 mins.), but you'll want to play it over & over. Great job, Phil. Can't wait to get his soph release.

RECOMMENDED FOR ANY CCM OR NEWSBOYS FAN!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars good cd, June 28, 2000

i listen to all kinds of music ranging from limp bizkit to dixie chicks and everything in between, including the newsboys (which led me to this cd). personally....i really enjoyed this album. phil shows a musical side played on by the band he is a member in (newsboys) but never actually played on. in this cd one hears alot more guitar and vocals which makes it seem more personal. the lyrics in the songs are alot more straightforward with their message and very poetic. some songs i really enjoyed where "tonight" and "together". "tonight" talks about realizing God's calling and that its time to answer (over a popish rock beat over guitar). "together" is a simple love song talking about phil's love for his wife and his homeland (new zealand) and his longing to do God's will with his life. over all this is a great cd and i suggest it to whomever is ready to try something old with a new twist!

I absolutely love this CD. Newsboys is a great band, and in songs like "Entertaining Angels" where Phil Joel was the lead singer, the songs came out nice and crisp. Well now Phil Joel's voice is packed into this freshman album. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Album About a Life Lived In Christ, May 4, 2003
This review is from: Watching Over You (Audio CD)
I have to begin by saying I am a huge fan of the Newsboys! I have seen them in concert at least 5 times. They are one of the most innovative Christian bands, and they stay true to the heart of their message... Jesus is Lord of all!
Phil Joel is a strong example of what the Newsboys have accomplished in Christian music, creativity and joy comes across with every note. This album is written in reflection of a life lived in Christ. He talks about what it is like to be; cared for by God, different than the status quo, saved by grace, and in awe of how wonderful Jesus really is!
His music is pop rock, driven by guitars and catchy hooks. He is definitely sincere about his faith and love for God. And that comes across loud and clear in each of his songs.
The title cut is great. It is varied in musical approach with acoustic and electric guitars. He showcases his great voice which can sing in regular melody lines and reach high into fallsetto ranges.
I especially like the song "Strangely Normal". I like his approach to telling what it's like to be a unique and loved creation of God. The song says, "Make for yourself no apologies. Keep your eyes on Jesus and let him be the author of our lives and, by following Jesus we become who we're supposed to be."
I love that message! Phil Joel is very positive and accurately portrays the benefits of a life lived in Christ. This is an enjoyable album and well worth your time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD for Newsboys Fans or just music fans...:), February 4, 2001
This review is from: Watching Over You (Audio CD)
I didn't acctually BUY this CD. I downloaded it...but will buy it soon...and well...Its awsome. I'm a big newsboys fan. I love their music and their lyrics (even though a few of the songs have 'STUPID' lyrics). This CD is NOT a Newsboys CD, but was produced by the lead singer/guitar/drum player for the Newsboys, and sung by the the vocal/bass player of the Newsboys.

Granted, Phil has crazy hair (he has the long hair thing goin), but his lyric tell a great message.

1. The title song, God Is Watching Over You, tells how God will never leave us or forsake us. He says us "Down by the waterline..." and every where you go.

2. Strangly Normal tells about a girl who wants to be a normal person and do things that 'normal' people do. But then she relized that she ws, in a strange way, normal...beacause she had Christ guiding her life.

3. El Salvador is spanish for My Savior. The upbeat song tells about the saving power Christ in our lives and how we will never know just how much he loves us.

4. Author of Life is a song dedicated to the Lord: The Author of 'OUR' lives. it tells how we want want im to be the Leader of our life and take us and lead us where he wants us to go.

5. Tonight (not fading away) is a rather loud, yet fun song that tells how at night or anytime of our day, that we should and do think of the Lord; how our thoughts should not fade away. Also, how we should give our lives to the Lord.

6. A funky beat song; it also has a bit of, in the chorus, what sounds like to me as the song There She Goes. It tells about how our Generation needs more of the Lord.

7. Be Number One is just about what the name says: how we want God to be #1 in our lives. It has kinda the same meaning as the song 'I Surrender All', but says that we want God to be #1

8. Fragile tells about how we are NOT immortal and how we need to have Jesus carry us through the day and night. Also, it tells how we shouldn't WASTE our life.

9. It's You is a song about how we are loking for someone to care for us and that that ONE person is Jesus; That we don't really need anyone else in our life.

10. Together has a kind of what sound like romantic chorus. How we all need someone to be Together and in love with.

The only bad thing about this CD is that it is only 33:04 long...its a short CD. But I really think that it is worth your money. Im am going to buy it soon.

JASON ANDERSON
