4.0 out of 5 stars Widely Skilled.
The Watchman was, without a doubt, an interesting read. With a plot that twists and turns and scenes of extreme violence, furious action and even a couple of sex scenes it undoubtedly has everything one could want from a book without losing Ryan's traditionally authentic grip on military and operational exercises. 2.0 out of 5 stars Spare yourself
The book is incredibly slow getting to anything resembling a plot and, when it does, it's nearly total information dump in one chapter. The whole love-interest-thing is awkward and distracting from the story (I kept thinking "Jerry McGuire"). The idea for the book sounds interesting but it's poorly developed. I lost interest after chapter 16.

This review is from: The Watchman (Paperback)
The Watchman was, without a doubt, an interesting read. With a plot that twists and turns and scenes of extreme violence, furious action and even a couple of sex scenes it undoubtedly has everything one could want from a book without losing Ryan's traditionally authentic grip on military and operational exercises. It takes a person who has witnessed events of this nature to be able to write so daringly and openly. I was also extremely impressed with the twists that this story takes. Just as you settle back, confident that based on previous experiences of Ryan you have a good idea what is coming next, something throws you way off course. However in many ways if you are reading his selection in order there are similarities to The Hit List in the way the plot suddenly twists right at the end and leaves you salivating for a continuation!
My only gripe with this book was that, with the exceptance of the first few chapters, there isnt a whole lot of gritty military action, although this is compensated by Ryan's knowledge, experience and his innate skill as an author, a skill lacked by other ex-forces fictional writer who, in my opinion, would be completely incapable of writing a book to an appreciable level were it not for their personal experiences.
Well done Mr Ryan, another work of art.

5.0 out of 5 stars None stop action., January 31, 2003

What a ride. The first few chapters are a bit slow but once you’ve got the plot, it’s off. Excitement galore, this man is tough and does not mince his words, so it’s not for the faint of heart. Expect violence, sex and a whole lot of betrayal. Must read for anyone who wants to feel like there in the thick of it.

I have read all of Chris Ryan's book and enjoyed them all, however this one is the best. The action is non stop as with all but more punch. You can feel the energy. This book will grip you and keep you!
