Quick Cash In Made With Little Effort,

This review is from: Watchmen: The End is Nigh - Part 1 & 2 (Video Game)
What's the first thing a company does when they know that they have a huge hit on their hands? How about try to rake in a few extra bucks with the least amount of effort put in? That's the way that Watchmen: The End is Nigh plays. The game looks beautiful, the characters are rendered in stunning HD graphics and the environments are too. These are the only good things that the game has going for it however. The gameplay is boring and tedious. The combos do not vary much and new techniques learned do not feel beneficial since simple button-mashing still suffices. Constantly throwing opponents works better than anything else, along with attacking them while they are on the ground. The later special moves feel unresponsive, and as stated earlier, do not vary a whole lot. The AI is rather slow as well resulting in easy encounters with dull enemies. There might still be fun within this game, seeing as I still played it despite these flaws, however I would not recommend anyone to buy this game unless they absolutely loved the movie, like I did. If you're a major Watchmen fan then you can definitely get past these flaws otherwise I say to please save your money.

Wathcmen the end is nigh is basically a streets of rage beat em up which in this game it works watchmen the end is nigh parts 1 and 2 that was once a dlc but is now a disc form of the game the story takes place before the movie not very sure about were it takes place before the comic book
Pros of the game - You get to play as Rorschach or night owl and get to experience there different fighting styles Rorschach i think is the best of the 2 only because he can use weapons -Its is way cheaper to buy it on Xbox 360 and ps3 than Xbox live and PlayStation network -You can play co-op with a friend but only split-screen -It has both parts which makes the game last long both parts has different story lines which make them different than each other but part 2 is shorter than 1 -It is very fun to play this game it has different power ups and combos for each character to knock out enemies -Every level has different paths so it would separate the two and change game play -Every level has different enemies and different ways to fight them so game play never gets old This game for me was very fun and awesome diffidently money well spent which for me i only spent 10 dollars which cost way less than a dlc if you dont really like beat em up then you wont really like this game i would recommend that you watch game play to see if this game is for you

I was excited to play this game after seeing the movie, but I was really disappointed. The environments all look the same and there are only a few kinds of bad guys. To sum up the whole game you walk around and beat up bad guys. Not much of a plot besides that.

This game offers satisfying melee combat, and literally nothing else.
That's not quite fair -- it looks great for the most part, and the writing is absolutely top-notch. The story is interesting, and the incidental dialogue between the two playable characters and even from the enemies is surprisingly entertaining. But when it comes to the actual gameplay, you'll realize after about half an hour that you have done pretty much everything the game will let you do. You're supposedly working to unravel some big conspiracy, but you accomplish that by walking through uninteresting urban mazes and beating up uninteresting, anonymous enemies with the same basic moves for the entire game. Even your standard "find a way to open the door" puzzles just require you to look around for a few seconds until you find the necessary lever or whatever, and there's never any variation on the combat. It's disappointing that you never get to play any characters besides Rorschach and Nite Owl (although they are pretty well done), and that even with those two you never do anything like, say, fight someone with a gun. That's really my biggest gripe with this game, that none of the enemies who are trying to kill you ever pull out a gun, even when they're police officers or mercenaries. The boss of episode 1 is literally wearing a flamethrower during your entire battle, and the main impact that has on the fight is that you can't punch him in the back because of the big gas tank. Seriously. He only actually uses it at the very end of the sequence, and he does so in the dumbest way possible. So why did I give this three stars? Because I did really enjoy the melee combat in short doses. Some of the finishing moves are fun to watch even after you've seen them 50 times. (There's one Rorschach does that I like to call "Nut Spank" -- cracks me up every time.) It's kind of a button masher, but not really more so than your average God of War clone. And it's cheap. I think it's worth the price for something to play after work for half an hour or so every now and then when you just want to blow off some steam but you're not in the mood for a shooter. EDIT: I dropped my rating by a star because I stopped playing this after a couple weeks and haven't had any desire in the months since to pick it up again. You can almost certainly find something with more replay value to spend a similar amount of money on.

Who Mashes the Button Mashers?,

Historically, and to a lesser extent traditionally, most movie-to-video-game tie ins do not bode very well with fans and the general gamer audience alike. Come to think of it, I believe I can only think of two (Top Gun and Golden Eye). Watchmen: The End is Nigh ("End if Nigh") is not much of an exception is any at all.
I had some big reservations about a Watchmen video game when my friend called me up and asked if I wanted to try it out the night of its release. I had never even heard of it despite the fact that I was gearing up to pick up the Watchmen DVD at midnight (12:01am release), there was virtually no hype. My friend, my little brother and I took the game home and immediately set out to play it... and were pleasantly surprised by the results. The End is Nigh is, above all else, a gratuitous button masher where you hit buttons fast and repeatedly to achieve certain moves to kick the living crap out of your opponents. Playing as Watchmen protagonists Night Owl and Rorschach, you set out to solve a mystery behind a large prison break of an "Underboss" at Sing Sing. Along the way you beat up just about everybody and, after taking the extreme long way around of getting everywhere you go, you then discover you have to go another scenic route around necessitating you thrash and otherwise incapacitate more bad guys. You also gain your abilities and button combos over the course of the game via collectable tokens (collect them all for a gamer score!). This is the general flow of the game, spanned over the course of about 4-6 hours. Why they split the game into two separate games on the same disc is beyond me, but they do count as two different games as far as the Xbox360 achievements section is concerned and the achievements are not that hard to get. Come to think of it, the game poses little challenge at all for anyone who has played Smash Bros., Golden Axe, King of Fighters, or any other sort of button masher. If you find yourself surrounded, either grab and throw someone or have your right index finger glued to the right bumper ready to initiate a counter since enemies cannot attack you during special moves. As for the moves themselves I can sum them up in one word, "ouch." This was probably the best part of the game: when the character is doing their special move the camera focuses on the person and a small cinematic plays of the actual move giving the player a chance to sit back (briefly) and go "Ooooohhhh, AHHHHH!" when they see just how painful the beating the bad guys are receiving. From curb-stomping to face clawing, the special moves both Night Owl and Rorschach exhibit are nothing short of bone-crunching painful, which makes them ever-so enjoyable to watch. What really makes The End is Night worthwhile is that it contains a split-screen co-op mode. Granted the split-screen goes vertical and not horizontal, which makes viewing angles a little narrow, but it was fun for my brother and I to collectively dish out vast amounts of physical punishment on the cookie-cutter villains that all sound like they were all voiced by John DiMaggio (Bender from Futurama). However, for all the good features the makers put into The End is Nigh, there was a good amount of flaws. First is the highly repetitive nature of the game. Between the villains saying the same things every time (with multiple references to female body parts) and the same upbeat fighting music playing in every fight scene, it got REALLY old after an hour. Not to mention the camera angles in co-op were really narrow amplified by the highly linear and dark atmospheres that made finding your way a severe pain. I understand that the film was excessively dark (with extra noir) but a player has to be able to see where he's going. I had to turn the brightness on the game settings all the way up just to see in certain levels and then turn it back down during others. All in all, The End is Nigh is a worthy rental. No real replay value beyond "Hey, after our eleventh beer let's go beat up some bad guys on the 260," and I think Halo has the slot for best drunk game.

Well, I got this game awhile back played it for about 3 days and I totally forgot about it. But, today I got an email from Amazon to review this game.....
I was excited to see this game for 20 bucks with part 2 so, I was like no way is this game junk like some xbox elitist were calling out to it. Well, sometimes they're right... As much as i love butten mashing brawler games this is one of those rare few that goes to the low of the low. Where to begin? First every stage is insanely dark at times to where you can't see anything going on and all you can do is mash attack to stay alive. Like ok thats not fun cause I do enjoy seeing what the heck I'm doing eh? Two sometimes your AI helper is supposed to pull a switch with you or climb up a step and go through a bay door that you're opening for him so, that he can let you in. Well, guess what your helper will be stuck on something cheap like a side part of the step or he'll just do nothing while you pull the switch. Third just like helper the game at times will not open the next fight scene till you run to right spot in that section and even then it's not guaranteed. Fourth remember I said this game is dark? Well, in the swear stage where it's extra extra dark and the game makes you run back to spots to do another fight then run back to other spot again for fight you can easily get lost and find yourself wondering around uselessly and if you get that third problem I mentioned extra waste of time.... Fifth I'm not super into acheivements but, to get them all wouldn't be hard if game wasn't glitched and the total kills/combo acheivements can only be had through 1 player so, if you're into those acheivements have fun not having fun beating this game 3 or 4 times. Sixth Aw, heck I'm tired of pointing out major problems with this game....Just avoid it. Yeah brawlers tend to have their little quirks that can be a pain but, this one has too many that just makes you feel like a choir to play and theres no other reason to cept that you wasted money on it and feel you should play more than an hour and perhaps unlock an achievement.... Oh and last did you know the watchmen when they walk into little derbies such as bottles or other little junk they slow down tremendessly while computer will just beat you up and whats this a little curb no the watchmen cant jump or auto walk up they always use the little step to go up curbs so have fun being always forced to find walkways every 30 feet in the game (ok I exaggerated on how often you find curbs but, theres plenty to make you feel like they're everywhere to kill time...)

A violent, fun, and great looking game...,

This game is cheaper than most because it combines two downloadable games from Xbox Live. These were 'mini-games' in a sense, so be aware that the overall production value and level design will not compete with most big budget games on the market today. However, this game is actually more fun than most games twice its price. Incredibly fun actually, and incredibly violent. It's a simple violent brawler providing a sigh of relief to the mass of overly complicated first person shooters out there. You will not see these type of characters anywhere else either...and the enemies are repetitive but somehow they never get old. You will annihilate swarms of thugs, cops, and even gimps and prostitutes. So have fun, rampage through the wild streets of NYC, bashing heads as Rorschach or Night Owl. Enjoy while it lasts, because who knows how many complicated army games will come out before another fun brawler.

This is a fantastic game, especially for the money.
It isn't glamourous...I mean, there isn't even a "jump" function for the heroes. The story line is well done, but, overall, this is a pure brawler, and nothing else. But, if you love action games with a ton of fighting, or are just a Watchmen fan, then this game is for you.

Well, my step brother and step sister were coming over. My step brother likes shooters and fighting games, so I went and rented this. I am happy it was a rental. I had never seen the Watchmen movie, though I rented it with the game. At first I said I liked the game. It seemed fun enough. You run around and fight off the evil baddies. That was all fine and good. Then I realized that was about all I would be doing. You run around and fight enemies over and over and over again.
While one of the characters can run, the other kind of walks or wobbles, as if he has to go to the bathroom. Sometimes, the controls seem to just stop. It was as if I were stuck behind an invisible wall. The combat is very minimal. Meaning you just hit the buttons and the enemies will eventually go down. If I were a science guy, I would have a monkey play and beat the game in hours. Seriously folks, it's that easy. So if you like button mashers, you may, MAY enjoy this game. I would say rent it. Then, the voice acting. Wow, it's really bad. I mean, maybe its part of the movie or something. Shady guys that talk strange in a costume. But if not, they could have at least hired people who could do at least a good line every now and then. I mean it was so ridiculously bad, that it made me laugh over and over again. It made me forget that I was playing a game that was meant to be serious. Now, as I said the game is very easy. But, they have parts that are ridiculously, annoyingly hard. My step brother and I were getting through really fast. Then came the darn lock. Let me tell you, picking the dang lock was crazy. We both tried for like 10 minutes. Then it was time for dinner, so we went up and ate. Then we came down and tried for about 20 minutes. It was annoying. Every time you would have like all but two picked, you would accidently hit the button and the freaking thing would make you start all over. We never got it unlocked. I remembered that I had Call of Duty World at War. So we played that. I was just playing it again, by myself. My step bro and sis went home. It was even more annoying this time. I couldn't even play enough to get to the lock pick. It was just annoying. For those that liked the movie and, or, like button mashers, I would say rent this before you buy it. It really is nothing but a bunch of bad ideas, controls and voice work, all thrown into a blender and made this game. I know some will probably like it. As well as I am sure that there are some who picked the lock no problem. But I am even more sure that there will be more people who find it annoying and un fun after about an hour. So, save yourself the stress and money and rent it if you must. |
