Editorial Reviews

Review

Building a water feature is no simple project. A rushed job will result in an amateur-looking finish and, even worse, a feature not in the right place causing a multitude of problems. "Water Garden Design" is an excellent prop for both the first time water gardener as well as those seeking a more inspirational idea to include in their garden. Following on from the basic knowledge required for siting, excavation and construction of ponds and water features are 15 different designs ranging from the simple bubble fountain to the more advanced streams and waterfalls. Woodland settings, formal settings and contemporary situations are all featured accompanied by clear construction details, planting plans and associated tips. Gloriously illustrated with both colour photographs and detailed colour drawings, it opens ones mind to the endless possibilities offered by the inclusion of water in the garden. Calmness, reflection, light play and the myriad of wildlife drawn to water combine to make a haven of peace in your own green space. The gentle trickle or cascade of water inducing a relaxed air into what is all too often noisy surroundings. Fish are covered too for those wanting a splash of moving colour in their pond and the comprehensive plant directory, arranged by seasonal interest, should ensure a floriferous display throughout the year. Ending on a diary of maintenance, this excellent book gives all the facts clearly and concisely whilst at the same time inspiring one with the beautiful designs featured. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This review is from: The Water Garden Design Book (Hardcover)
This book has given me the confidence to go ahead and get working on my first water garden. It is pretty complete -- the introduction and essentials outlines some of the basics, and then there are 15 different designs, beautifully rendered with both photos and illustration, lots of tips, steps involved, points to remember, etc. These are designs with at least one significant distingushing feature; they are not all "dig a hole and line the rim with rocks". My coworker has had half-a-dozen koi ponds over the last 15+ years, and his verification of what this book was telling me lent it credibility to me. Near the end of the book details mainenance throughout the year, particular fish and their particular needs, what to think about with plants, etc. I saw other books on the shelf on water gardening, but having read this I don't feel I need to get another.
