Review
Water has been an important element in gardens for centuries. The Ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians all integrated water into their gardens. From Islamic courtyard fountains to Moorish canals, from Mogul paradises and Renaissance formality, the fascination with water has perpetuated through the centuries and still holds true today. From the delicate trickle of a small water feature to the gushing of a natural waterfall, the sound of this most precious of all earth's elements brings peace and a sense of tranquillity to all gardens. Small ponds, formal ponds, rills, canals and swimming pools are all examined in this stunningly illustrated book. Written by Gilly Love, famed for her love of water gardens in the gardening press, and consultant Peter Robinson, gives advice on design and structure for all manner of features. Contemporary and rustic, formal and natural, whatever size of garden you have there is a design to inspire. Gilly Love is quick to point out the inspiration that can be taken from large water features and translated into versions more suitable for today's smaller spaces. Divided into three sections - static ponds, running streams and ornamentation such as fountains - the work gives a balanced overview of the subject and ends on a detailed plant directory for aquatic and marginal plantings. Practical projects are included within each of the three sections with striking small water features such as mosaic bowls and copper balls for the reader to make themselves. For anyone thinking of installing a water feature this is a practical and appealing guide full of sound advice from two acknowledged experts in the field.
