Gr. 3-5. This large, densely illustrated entry in the new 24 Hours series follows the animals at a waterhole in a parched landscape from dawn to midnight. Shalev focuses especially on zebras, elephants, giraffes, lions, and hawks, but also includes many other wild creatures. The habitat is clearly African savannah, though no particular place is named, and there is no map. The inset photo reproductions with labeled animals are too small to decipher, and some statements aren't well explained (Why is the wildebeest "peculiar-looking"?), but the double-page spreads, in the publisher's signature style, are packed with lots of fascinating zoology snippets, colorful photos of individual animals, and framed, captioned pictures. Good for sharing with younger readers, this book will also attract older browsers. Also in this series is
Coral Reef.
