5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent Pop with a Powerhouse Vocal June 25, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
A few months ago, I was able to catch one of my favorite bands---Delta Rae--in front of a massive packed crowd in their hometown of Durham. While they were amazing as always, I left raving about the first opening act, Jillette Johnson. Somehow she was able to turn a simple performance on just a keyboard in front of an audience unfamiliar with her work into a highly emotional and charged experience. My friend who I went with even started crying during her performance of "Cameron" (incidentally the song that got her signed).

Jillette's particular brand of pop is similar to that of Sara Bareilles, it's highly listenable piano driven pop paired with intelligent lyrics and a powerhouse vocal. At times actually, I think I can hear a little bit of Idina Menzel in Jillette's voice. The music is layered nicely as well. Knowing that Jillette more than likely wrote most of these songs by first starting at the piano, her music never feels like disjointed or an afterthought. There are strings, drums, horns etc. when there needs to be, and just her voice and her piano when it needs to be. Much credit to her producers Peter Zizzo (Vanessa Carlton, Avril Lavigne) and Michael Mangini (Joss Stone, David Byrne) for helping her achieve this tricky balance.

Immediately after I saw her in concert though, I went out and bought her excellent little EP "Whiskey & Frosting." So I sort of initially bought this album simply out of an appreciation for what Jillette does, but I had resigned myself to believing that the EP probably had contained all of her best songs. Not so. While I still love the songs from the EP, the rest of this album is equally as good. "True North" and "Basset Hound" are immediate standouts.

Jillette's voice is both beautiful and mesmerizing. She can belt and sing softly both high and low. Her lyrics are raw and relatable. All around great album with different sounds

Johnson is a creative, thoughtful songwriter whose poetic lyrics are catchy enough to get stuck in your head for days and days. Her storytelling is magnificent and evokes an emotional, empathetic response ("Cameron", "Pauvre Coeur").

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing July 5, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I first heard of Jillette Johnson by viewing a live performance video of her performing solo (stripped down) @ The Kessler Theater in Dallas. I was impressed with her ability at both songwriting and playing solo. She really appealed to my musical tastes from that video alone. So, after seeing she had a new CD coming out I immediately ordered it.
The CD was way different than her live performance versions of the songs I've seen her perform live on YouTube and just listening to the two versions of "Cameron" on the "Water In A Whale" CD are very indictive of what I am trying to convey. The "stripped" version is nicely done but the alternate version is way over produced (i.e. major effects on the drums) and sounds like Lady Gaga more than the solo artist I had appreciated. I'm not sure who guided her in this direction (probably a producer or even herself) but I think it was a mistake, There are only about two songs on the entire CD that aren't over produced. She is a good songwriter and musician. I just don't like the direction this CD is taken.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing music! July 22, 2013

Jillette writes all her songs, performing them in a breathless style. She plays keyboards while singing great stories of her life in New York City. These songs are literate, not the typical boring love stories and such. Give it a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful vocals & words July 16, 2013
By X
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Not only can I enjoy Jillette's powerful voice, but also her lyrics. I believe she selects her words with care and isn't afraid to have fun with them (i.e. "belly of a well," "water in a whale"). I find this refreshing because popular radio is constantly shoving lyrical baby food down our throats: I'd rather have something I can sink my teeth into. Songs like "Torpedo," "Basset Hound," and "Butterfly Catcher" still have a catchy, pop sound that will likely appeal to most listeners, but the emotion and thought behind the creation of these songs are apparent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection July 10, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I've been obsessed with Jillette Johnson ever since I discovered her EP Whiskey & Frosting on Spotify last year. I immediately purchased the EP and have been waiting for her album to be released ever since! Her voice is beautiful, the songs are inspiring and relateable, and the lyrics are creative and touching. I absolutely love that the songs are piano based with violins and percussion perfectly intertwined with her melodic voice to create an exceptional musical experience. As a 24 year old young woman I can relate perfectly to the album, but I think that the lyrics and melodies can be loved by people of all ages. My favorite tracks are Peter Pan, Heathen, 17, and When the Ship Goes Down but I honestly love every song! This is defintely worth the $5 (and I would have paid way more!)
