The most striking characteristic of this CD is how good it sounds. If you've ever endured a musical performance on period instruments which gave you "history" at the expense of sonic appeal, you'll know what I mean. Tafelmusik, on the other hand, gives you historical authenticity--to the extent we can determine what that is--but really great-sounding music at the same time. OK, I'll concede that a good part of that sound is due to G. F. Händel, a composer richly gifted in producing fine-sounding music, but Tafelmusik treats him as he should be treated, with the result that our ears are extraordinarily blessed by the sounds emanating from this little bit of plastic.

Tafelmusik, a Canadian ensemble founded in 1979 and based in Toronto, has since its inception been devoted both to authentic performances and to really good music-making. And it has been strikingly successful in achieving both goals for some 30 years under the music direction of violinist Jeanne Lamon. Though begun as a baroque orchestra, it has subsequently broadened its scope somewhat with the addition of a choir and repertoire including classical music "and beyond." Altogether it has issued some 76 recordings on the labels Collegium, BMG, Sony, and (Canadian) Analekta, gaining many prestigious awards and nominations. (The present recording--in its previous issue--was nominated for a Juno award for "Best Classical Album: Large Ensemble" in 1997.)

Why does this disk sound so good? Probably the most fundamental reason is Tafelmusik's fine playing. Because of its obvious enthusiasm for the music it plays the group has invested much time and effort over many years perfecting its artistry. The result clearly shows in its sparkling performances and recordings.

I bought this on a whim based on the quality of Tafelmusik and Lamon's recording of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos Bach - Brandenburg Concertos / Lamon, Tafelmusik (which is the best recording I have ever heard of the Brandenburgs, and I own a few, and have heard several more), only later to find that this is the performance most recommended by Ted Libbey in his book The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection : The 350 Essential Works. I already owned a couple of really good recordings of Handel's Water Music, but this is certainly worth buying even if you are satisfied with another recording. It is superb, in sound quality and more importantly, in the exquisite performance, which has a crisp, clean, joyous and beautiful sound. Buy this before it goes out of print, and buy their exquisite performance of the Brandenburgs. This disc has gotten me to order some more discs of Tafelmusik & Jeanne Lamon; this disc is really magnificent. And at the low price of this disc, it is a fantastic deal. Buy it now!

Edited to add:

This is the same music as:

Water Music

That was the original release, though I first encountered this in the present form.

And if you do not care about booklets, you can get this in this set:

This disc from 1995 has been remastered using the Sony Direct Stream technology to further enhance a recording that already sounded very good. The result is a disc of excellent audio quality capable of being compared favourably to any other disc of this music.

The music itself is a mixture of delicate and more rumbustious dance - inspired movements. These are intermingled with movements of some pomp and circumstance. These pieces are often played as three suites in F, G and D majors where the indoor pieces are separated from the suite in D which contains music more suited for outdoor performance as originally intended. However, this disc, like many others such as that by Pinnock and the English Concert, is arranged to play with the suite in F placed first and then followed by a mixture of the suites in G and D. This makes for a comfortable and familiar sequence.

The playing of Tafelmusik under the direction of Jeanne Lamon delivers the kind of excellence that has long been associated with this group. Slow movements are exquisitely paced and phrased while the faster movements have an infectious dance quality which constantly remind us how deeply embedded into the dance genre of the court this music was at that time. The more splendid effects of the trumpet led movements also remind us of the outdoor nature of sections of the music. Once more, the players of Tafelmusik deliver immaculate playing on their 'period' instruments.

The suite form Il Pastor Fido, the Faithful Shepherd, is an orchestral distillation of a stage production much favoured by Thomas Beecham at one time.
