Gardiner's superb rendition of Handel's "Water Music", May 1, 2001
This review is from: Water Music Suites 1-3 (Audio CD)
Unquestionably one of the best recordings I've heard from a John Eliot Gardiner-conducted ensemble. His tempi are swift, yet sound right on the mark. And the English Baroque Soloists give an energetic, enthusiastic performance marked by the crisp precision playing of the trumpets and horns. If this isn't the definitive recording of Handel's Water Music, then it comes close. Philips' sound engineers did a first rate job in creating an extremely well-balanced recording. The sound quality is just as vivid in the new Philips 50 version of this release, but as an added bonus, there is a splendid performance of Handel's "Fireworks Music" from Gardiner and his ensemble. You won't go wrong with purchasing this CD, but you may wish to wait for the Philips 50 version.
