5.0 out of 5 stars Beats the heat!
This is the handiest thing I've found for walking my dogs since I found the on-leash carrier for waste bags! With record heat in Texas (over 100 degrees for 17 days and counting), this is an absolute necessity. My dogs didn't require any "learning" period - just gratefully lapped up the water the first time I used it. I fill it at night and keep it in the fridge so...

3.0 out of 5 stars It is not a thermal bottle, water gets warm and the closure plug pokes the dog in the eye
I purchased the 15 oz water rover, it is smaller than it sounds and it does not keep the water cold... would definitely order the largest size...my 40lb dog drank the whole 15 oz at one time. Why can't they invent thermal water bottles for dogs? They make them for people. Anyway, when I unplug the water bottle and put the dish on the ground for the water to flow in,...

My dogs didn't require any "learning" period - just gratefully lapped up the water the first time I used it. I fill it at night and keep it in the fridge so it's cool and ready to go. Also, haven't had any problems with "spillage" - just slowly tip to fill water reservoir and to turn back upright. Great product! Highly recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Idea!, December 23, 2010

I've tried many types of water bottles for the dogs, but they seem to prefer this one above others. (I do too!) The round bowl seems to be easier for them to drink out of, and you can either hold the bottle or put it right on the ground. Since you can tilt the bottle so the water goes right back in the bottle, you don't waste any precious water on a hike. That being said, you MUST wash the bottle out thoroughly when you get home, since you end up with dog saliva backwash in the bottle so it needs a good cleaning! The 15oz is a nice size to carry for a short hike, without being too bulky.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product!, November 26, 2010

Ordered this October 2010 and have used it many many many times. It is perfect for hydrating my dog, mainly on long "bye-byes" or "walkies".

Totally ingenious design: fill it with water, open snap cap when ready to drink, and attached bowl fills with water. Set it down (or even hand-hold), and your dog will love you even more.

What makes this even more cool, is that "un-used" water simply returns to bottle, snap it closed, and you're off.

Integrated clip attaches easily to belt of pocket lip, and not burdening at all. Lightweight even if filled with water.

One of the greatest pet products EVER, in my opinion!

Bought this item a few weeks ago and it has worked well for me.The dog and I both enjoy our walks much more now especially when it is hot out.Very easy to use and continue on your walk.My only worry is how long the cap will hold out as it is not very sturdy.Would still purchase it again unless I were to find something better.

Anyway, when I unplug the water bottle and put the dish on the ground for the water to flow in, the plug pokes the dogs in the eye while they are drinking....you cannot get the plug out of the way!! It happened with small, medium and large size dogs. I tried to clip it under the two prongs that are for clipping the contraption to your waistband, but it will not stay.

2.0 out of 5 stars Overpriced and It Leaks!, December 22, 2010

This very same water bottle was once marketed and sold by Lixit (a well known water bottle company for small animal and bird cages). They no longer sell this design, so my review is mostly about the new Water Rover water bottle shown here, which I just received (Dec. 2010) and paid $14 each for (compared to the $4 that Lixit had been charging for the same bottle when it was sold by them).

I've used the original 16-oz. Lixit Thirsty Dog Water Bottle/Bowl with the 4" hard plastic cup attached to the end of the lid for several years now (and given half a dozen away to other dog owners, then re-ordered to always have a back-up on hand). It *WAS* a great water bottle that never leaked, and I always had a convenient cup available for the dog to drink from when we were away from home. I use a service dog, so the water bottle received daily hard use and the original bottle lasted over 4 years before it got banged up enough to start leaking a little.

I wrote to Lixit to find out why they changed the design of their bottle - it was because the original manufacturer of this Water Rover design was jacking the price out of range for most dog owners. Unfortunately, Lixit kept the same UPC code and name for their new bottle design (Thirsty Dog Portable Pet Water Bowl - 20 ounces), which is confusing when searching for a water bottle based on other people's reviews. I tried the new Thirsty Dog Portable Pet Water Bowl - 20 ounces, but it leaked like a sieve (1/3 cup leaked into a ziploc bag over 3 days of leaving the bottle laying on its side while sitting on the kitchen counter), and the flexible rubber bowl attached to the side of the bottle is VERY DIFFICULT to flip inside-out for the dog to drink from - and even more difficult to return to its original shape so that it hugs the side of the bottle.

I solved the leaking problem with the brand new $14 Water Rover bottles by going to my local hardware store where there are smart folks to help you out, and I bought O-ring washers to insert in the lids. This completely stopped the leaking. But the added 79 cents for the washer plus the time, gas and effort of going to the hardware store shouldn't be necessary for a $14 water bottle.
