From the Manufacturer

This WaterSentinel WSW-1 Replacement Water Filter for Frigidaire WF1CB (1-PACK) contains a compressed carbon block which provides tremendous capacity to remove and/or reduce impurities and sediment that may be present in your drinking water. The carbon block has millions of active sites on its surface and within the structure which can absorb impurities like a sponge, and can adsorb and hold other types of impurities on its surface like a magnet. Additionally, this filter can catalytically breakdown other impurities very similar to the way a catalytic converter works in your automobile. These processes ensure that you are getting the cleanest and best tasting water possible.

On this site it says they are tested for ANSI/NSF 42 AND 53, however, when I received the filters, the box only claims tested for standard 42. This is important because standard 53 is for the reduction of Lead, Mercury, Benzene, p-Dichlorobenzene,Toxaphene and Carbofuran. You might not have these elements in your water, but you should know what you're paying for!

Long overdue update: Filter did nothing to improve the taste of our unpleasant Central Florida water. The OEM filters on the other hand work very well. Threw the entire 3 pack in the trash.

I sent the following message to Water Sentinel on 11/30/10 and have not received a response as of 12/16/10. Will sell my "inventory" at a steep discount! :)

The other afternoon the water filter in my KitchenAid refrigerator blew up for no apparent reason. See attached photo. Fortunately I was nearby and able to shut off the water quickly and avoid any major damage, but if I was at work and it pumped water into my house for even a few hours, or traveling for two weeks at a time it could have easily done tens of thousands of damage to my home. I now have four filters left from a six-pack that was purchased recently. Are these filters any good, or should they be tossed and replaced with something of better quality? What suggestions do you have for avoiding this problem in the future, or do we have to shut off the water every time we leave the house?

I have a WSW-1 and the end blew off and started shooting water out the front of the refrigerator and all over the floor. Fortunately we were in the next room when it happened. If we had been away it could have caused thousands of dollars of water damage. In the future I will spend a little more money and get the Kenmore brand filters.

This filter is not a direct replacement for the Whirlpool filter. It is not NSF rated, and has only one filtration element, not the three in the factory filter. They should have made this clear that it was not a replacement, but a less-effective substitute. Perhaps I should have realized this given the price was much less than a true replacement.

After owning it for about 6 months, the filter sprung a leak. Fortunately, it was a small one, and didn't flood the house. I contacted the manufacturer, and they replaced it, but this just demonstrates that it is of poor quality. I would not buy this unit, but would stay with the genuine Whirlpool filter.

I have used this exact filter for several years in our kenmore frig. easy to change and has never exploded or leaked for me. After reading other reviews, I was worried about others having leakage problems, but I still continue to buy and use them, with no issues.
Also, I agree with the review back in 2010, which said that this is a "taste-removing ONLY" filter (NSF 42 tested). Even though the Amazon ad continues to state that this filter is BOTH NSF 42 and 53 tested... my latest order in March 2012 showed only NSF#42 on the box.

I just had one of these explode for no apparent reason. It had been in the Fridge for about 3 months and suddenly exploded! Broke completely in half. Ruined my laminate flooring in the kitchen. Even though we happened to be home and caught it quickly, there was still a LOT of water blasting out. By the time I could get the fridge out and the water shut off the damage was done.

This item is made by Water Sentinel. But, if you search "Whirlpool 4396508", the result you get is shown as "3 Pack Whirlpool 4396508 Replacement Filter by Water Sentinel by Whirlpool". The extension of "BY WHIRLPOOL" drops only when you click that link and get to the page of product. And there, it shows a picture of Whirlpool filter, NOT a WATER SENTINEL filter.

I've used about 6 of these and never had a problem until the 6th one. I was upstairs and our nanny came running up saying that water was pouring out from underneath our fridge. When I came down, half of our kitchen was flooded. I shut the water main off and when I took the grill off the fridge, I found the filter just hanging there. The end was completely busted off. I don't know how we're going to get the piece that screws in out as it's way up in there. Had we not been home, I can't even imagine the amount of damage that would have resulted. I don't care that only 1 of 6 exploded, considering that others are stating the same thing, I will never buy this brand again. It is not worth the possible damage. I will pay extra for OEM, look at it as flood insurance!
