Book Description

May 1, 2008
Water Works is a field-tested physical science unit for high-ability learners in grades K–1. This unit engages students in scientific investigation as they closely observe and experiment with water. Students are transformed into scientists who notice, react to, reflect on, and discover more about force and change.

The concept of change is reinforced while students explore the characteristics of items that sink and float, experiment to make objects float, and examine how materials interact with water. Water Works, a Project Clarion Primary Science Unit, utilizes a hands-on, constructivist approach that allows children to build their knowledge base and skills while they explore science topics through play and planned investigations.

Winner of the 2009 NAGC Curriculum Studies Award, Water Works was developed by the Center for Gifted Education at The College of William and Mary, to offer advanced curriculum supported by years of research. The Center's materials have received national recognition from the United States Department of Education and the National Association for Gifted Children, and they are widely used both nationally and internationally.

Each of the books in this series offers curriculum that focuses on advanced content and higher level processes. The science units contain simulations of real-word problems, and students experience the work of real science by using data-handling skills, analyzing information, and evaluating results. The mathematics units provide sophisticated ideas and concepts, challenging extensions, higher order thinking skills, and opportunities for student exploration based on interest. These materials are a must for any teacher seeking to challenge and engage learners and increase achievement.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!, August 28, 2008

This review is from: Water Works: A Physical Science Unit for High-Ability Learners in Grades K-1 (Paperback)
Water Works is a Project Clarion physical science unit designed for high-ability learners in kindergarten and grade one. It was developed through the College of William and Mary's Center for Gifted Education. The soft cover workbook includes twelve hands-on lessons, reproducible worksheets, a concept map which may be filled in by the student for pre and post assessment, safety guidelines, and more. Lessons are designed for a 45 minute classroom experience.

The concept map is a word web with the word water in the center, surrounded by connections such as "evaporates in", "condenses on", and "flows". It is recommended that kindergarten students fill in the blanks on the pre-assessment chart using a word bank and that first graders attempt it without the word bank. This assumes that children using this book are able to both read and write, and that they are familiar with and able to read words such as "permutation" and "evaporation" in addition to more basic words like "up" and "down". If a teacher is using this with children who are not fluent readers, this exercise can be skipped or done collaboratively.

Lessons are well written and designed to challenge. They go way beyond the old "sink or float", which is covered in chapters ten and eleven, but goes into far more detail than you might expect. These chapters cover states of matter and density, and lead to the question of how to build a better floater. Other lesson titles include, "what is a scientist?" and "what happens when water is mixed with other liquids?" Concepts are explained in clear language, but also introduce scientific terminology.

It's quite refreshing to find a book for young elementary students that is not dumbed down. This is an excellent resource for young gifted children, and will work for instruction in classrooms and homeschools, and also as afterschool enrichment.

This is a terrific program for bright young kids who love to play with water.
