Book Description

October 1, 2009

The book John James Audubon would have made if he had used a camera.

Brushing aside rattlesnakes on Green Island, Texas, or enduring the bitter cold of an Alaskan winter, Theodore Cross has pursued waterbirds with passion. On four continents, from the tundra of eastern Siberia to the tropical islands of the South Pacific, he has captured elegant and unusual birds—from auklets and egrets to gannets and sanderlings—in peak action, be they courting, landing on a perch, plunge diving, or engaged in aerobatics.

These breathtaking photographs are accompanied by gracefully written field notes and fascinating accounts of the birds’ habits and habitat. The book is introduced by an extended anecdotal essay giving insights and observations of the extraordinary man who, at age eighty-five, is as eager to track down an eagle in Alaska as he was when he began photographing in midlife.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing Odyssey December 16, 2009
By Clemack
Format:Hardcover
Ted Cross's Waterbirds is one of those rare treasures that may come along once in a generation. Not only is it a book of profound beauty in the startling photographs of waterbirds throughout the world, but the movements that he captures in this tour are like an evening of Classical Symphony, a continuous soaring of emotion and colors.

The book would stand alone just with the astounding photographs, but it as an adventure tale, a journey and a quest of the noblest aspirations. Ted Cross gives us the excitement of the chase, like travelogues of the Voyages of Discovery, in his quest for these perfect specimens of nature and in their discovery, we are humbled by these birds' courage, their missions, and their triumphs. It is a book that makes us think profoundly about our place in nature and the lessons we can learn from one man's passionate pilgrimage to find perfection in the world around him.

This is one of most astounding books of nature that I have ever come upon. It is in its completeness as inspiring and moving as the flights of the beloved birds within.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling pictures, fascinating text December 16, 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having seen an earlier collection of Ted Cross's photographs in Birds of the Sea, Shore and Tundra, I was prepared for the beauty of the often stunning photographs abundantly populating Waterbirds. Only great skill, enormous and crafty patience can capture these birds, some of them quite wary, busily going about their business, oblivious to the capture of their antics and colorful images for our delight. When I stopped staring at the pictures, I was surprised to find a graceful and compelling narrative that tells a lot about the habits and motivations of the birds and reveals that the pursuit of waterbirds can involve visits to wide variety of locations. Some of these are tropical and idyllic, some in the far north are shared with polar bears and other locales, like a rattlesnake and alligator infested island of the coast of Texas, are quite dangerous. Engrossed in the stories, dazzled by the pictures, I couldn't stop reading it.

All Things Considered featured an interview, entitled "Extreme Bird-Watching From Tundra To Swamp" with author Theodore Cross this evening:

Who could resist? Certainly not me - I love birds, but my husband is the truly serious one (this goes in his stocking - a wonderful last minute addition).
Oh yes, you can see a number of the photos from the book on the All Things Considered article site.
