Blueflowers on Fire,
By James C Ayers (Rochester, Washington United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Watercolor Ghost Town (MP3 Download)
The Blueflowers have created my favorite album of the year. They combine the best elements of country, rock, and college radio music with interesting approaches to contemporary subjects, excellent musical sense, and strong harmonies. Like Neko Case's music, The Blueflowers music does not easily fall into a single category. The title track has an opening riff reminiscent of the Band's The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. This becomes the foundation for a bright, alt-rock tinged song and prepares the listener for the inventive twists to come. Kate Hinote's voice is perfect on the achingly beautiful I Can't Stop My Heart From Breaking. The memory of life's big, lasting heartbreak is created by the deeply layered reverb guitar and Hammond B3 organ. That memory is drawn to the present by the strength of Kate's voice. The Weight combines instruments commonly found in country music with a rock guitar lead to great effect. Again Kate's soaring vocals shine. The Strangled Song's upbeat tempo and lilting instrumentation contrast with the haunting harmonies and chilling lyrics creating a wonderful tension. The Blueflowers may well be Detroit's finest product. Do not wait. Buy this album now. You will be glad that you did. |
