This book was a prize from a survey questionaire. I would have never bought the book for myself because I never thought that I would make a watercolor journal but after reading this book and seeing the illustrations, I was so inspired!!! I had an old sketch pad and headed outside with it and this book, then, sat down and sketched things around my home and town. This sketching brought so much personal emotion to me as I looked closely at all the beauty around me in my everyday life. I slowed down my life to see, to really see and now I am taking a journal with me everywhere. Thanks for opening my eyes with the wonderful book containing beautiful drawings and words!!!

I'd bought Watercolor Journeys prior to an overseas trip and it was so helpful and inspirational. I just loved the insights, memories, notes and of course, the charming pen & inks with watercolor illustrations. Lots of tips and ideas on materials, art supplies, travel tips and generally SUPPORT for an artistic way to chronicle your adventures. A wonderful book. Also, the dedication to his wife is a real zinger. Lucky gal!

This book is a gem at conveying the rewards of creating a sketchbook journal. Much of it is made up of sketches of all types with short explanations about the location of the sketch. In a few cases the author explains how he created some of the effects. So it's not instructional as much as it is inspirational. It made me start sketching anew. Most of all the sketches are so good that they serve as some great examples to follows.

The author is Richard Schilling, both a watercolour artist and a dentist. Because of his job, he gets many opportunities to travel and while traveling, he draws and records what he sees. On some trips, he and his wife served as dental missionaries in developing countries.

The watercolour sketches are very nice and evoke the holiday mood. They are accompanied by drawing tips and some step-by-step demonstrations. There are even tips for those who travel on tour buses (like he does on some trips), protecting your work from rain, keeping yourself safe in foreign places and other interesting stuff.

I like the stories that go behind each drawing. Schilling talks the places and their charm, the interesting people he meets, cultures he discovers and the experience of travel sketching. There are funny tales on him being chased by a village dog or on the people who look over his shoulders when he draws.

"We meet as strangers but part as friends," is how he regards encounters with those who stop to compliment his painting efforts. And it's pretty much what the book encapsulates - the joy and possibilities in travel sketching and life itself.

This is a lovely sketchbook I think anyone can enjoy, even if you're not into painting.

I've had this book for a couple of years and it is clearly my favorite since I read it over and over again. The author does a lot of ink sketching with watercolor washes, a style that I find I really like. Good tips on materials and methods, but the example paintings are what keeps bringing me back. I recommend this book highly.

I preordered this book and just received it yesterday. The tips and instructive sections are very pertinent. I found them immediately usable. I am also delighted with the images from Schillings various sketchbooks. It meets my needs very well.

Watercolour Journeys is packed full of tbe artist's beautiful watercolour sketches and paintings along with dozens of ideas and notes on how to keep a travel journal. I collect artist's journals and this book is one of my favourites. Richard shares himself as he writes and draws. By the end you feel you know him.

This was a recommended book from one of the sketch sites I frequent. It's everything I would want from it. Has a few step by step examples...but the most joy was just reading the comments and seeing the authors wonder art work....so inspiring on many levels. I hope you would enjoy it also.

I was overjoyed to get this book. I am working on improving sketching skills and painting skills and this book is an inspiration. It is also a lovely book to just pick up and look through.
